Don't spend your time trying over and over to start a level three game. There are undoubtedly many others in the room trying to start one. Often times you will fail to join a game in time because you were (unsuccessfully) trying to start your own. Just wait until one gets started by someone else and be quick to hit the join button.
For more advanced users, you can play two characters at once. Here's what I do.
1) Set my monitor to very high resolution (make everything littler). I use 1600x1200.
2) Use the link on the players' guide to open two vmk windows. Resize the windows to exactly fit the game. A screen resolution of 1600x1200 lets you see all of both games.
3) Log in my player in one window and a mule in the other. Put them both in pirates lobby, but different instances (e.g. one in NW, one in SSE).
4) Whichever game window gets a level three started first, I join it with that character.
5) After a while I have to leave the computer before I get a migraine looking at the tiny little pirate ships...
