Want More HHI Points--What to Do?

DH and I have decided we want to look into adding more points at HHI. I know there are probably better options staying on the island as far as value, but we love DHHIR. Right now we own two 50-point contracts that we bought direct. We also own 100 AKV direct points. We have been using our AKV points to stay at HHI, but that has already proved difficult when trying to get certain spring dates. Here is our ultimate goal:
Year 1: Spring Trip in 1-BR (108 points) + Fall Trip in 1-BR (108 points)
Year 2: Spring Trip in 1-BR (108 points) + Fall Family Trip in either a GV (295 points) or a 2-BR and 1-BR (300 points)
Then repeat!
With this scenario we need 312 points, so quite a bit more than we have. We have decided that we are good with getting rid of our AKV points. We don't have a desire to go back to WDW, and if we ever do, we can always use our HHI points. I know MF are more, but we really believe it's worth it to be able to book at 11 months out. We are also not deterred by the 2042 expiration date. At first, I was wanting to hold on to AKV points just for the benefits from 2042-2057, but honestly, we aren't interested in those anymore. We also don't plan to go to WDW in our 70s and 80s. Once or twice with grandkids in our 60s will be the extent of what we might want to do. After our HHI points expire, we plan to continue vacationing on HHI.

So what I am wondering is if we should sell our HHI contracts in addition to the AKV contract, in order to buy all the points in the same UY. Right now we have June UYs but with wanting to do spring trips, we need an April UY. (We do sometimes have to cancel due to medical reasons.) Or should we keep the HHI contracts and add on more points--some with an April UY and some with a June UY? Would it be best to get around 110 with an April UY, book our spring trip, and then bank the remaining points to use on next year's spring trip? And then add on the rest of the points (around 110?) with a June UY to work with our existing 100 points? All of the June UY points would be used to book the fall trips. Or should I look at doing transfers from one membership to the other? This can all be so confusing. Please advise what would be the best way to proceed. Thank you in advance!

We own oct and dec at hhi. We like having the two use years. Both are 50 points. Mix of direct and resale.

If you sold your akv points, you could buy a larger hhi resale.

Can you elaborate on how you use your points? Do you book separate trips with the different UYs or do you transfer points in/out?

I would do 2 UYs - 1 for spring(maybe Dec-good amount of those contracts for resale) and August (also pretty popular) - and I wouldn’t necessarily count on sub $60. right now - more like $65-75…
I’m always looking for HHI resale contracts - sometimes Fidelity has super cheap ones but they go so fast it’ll make your head spin..

If you currently eligible for blue card benefits, I would hold on to those direct points at HHI and add a larger resale contract with a June or August UY. There are a couple loaded HHI contracts listed that would give you a nice cushion for banking over the next couple of years.

Also, 100 point AKV contracts are pretty popular and will sell quick at the right price.

I would ask this question in the Purchasing DVC Forum :)
That would make sense, wouldn't it? I actually thought that's where I was posting. Mods, could you move?

I'll keep a look out for those. We probably won't do anything until the end of next year. Hopefully, prices will drop even more by then. As far as UY, I would probably keep the June UY for the fall trips (also in case we ever have to do summer instead with family), but for the spring trips, you are right. December would work. I'm also thinking March and April as well.

I really don't want to sell the direct contracts even though I don't usually use the benefits. As long as two UYs aren't complicated to work around, I'm good with keeping them and adding a resale contract, but I would need an earlier UY for those spring trips.

That is good to know about the AKV contracts selling quickly.

I am also a HHI/AKV owner :hippie:
We have 100 resale (unrestricted) AKV points and 50 (direct) HHI points. My DH is no longer interested in WDW trips so now I go in the fall with either my BFF, my dad, my daughters (currently 18 and 20) or any combination thereof. We had been taking HHI trips in April over spring break every 2-3 years, but 2024 will be our last one since DD18 is a senior this year. After that, I know that we will still want to go to HHI (LOVE it there) but I am not sure how we are going to do it with only the 50 points. Perhaps we will go in the "off" season, or try and supplement the stays with the AKV points, which is getting harder to do. We don't stay in studios at HHI since we spend so much time in the room when we are there. I do not want to sell our AKV points since they are unrestricted and I still take trips to WDW every fall for my birthday (can't beat the 11-month window for those value 1BR's!) and both of my daughters have expressed an interest in "road-tripping" (from MICHIGAN!) to WDW. While we definitely have other things to be spending our money on right now (DD18 wants to go to Vanderbilt:scared:), I am casually window shopping for super-small HHI resales (50 points or less) with our Feb UY...they NeVeR pop up...so it's basically just dreaming:teeth:.

From my experience, be very patient looking for HHI points, and start looking NOW. It took us 8 months to find a HHI contract in the use year we already had (August), and at that, we had to settle for a contract that had more points than we'd wanted (Awww, gee).
By the way, have you always stayed in 1 Bedrooms, or have you stayed in studios in the past. That phrase "Once you try a 1 BR, you'll never go back to a studio" certainly applies at HHI, at least to me. We'd always stayed in 1 BRs, but one year we wanted to take an extra spring trip and were short on points, so we rented a studio. I spent the whole trip..."complaining"..about missing a 1 Bedroom.
Good luck! Hope you get your points quickly!

I'm sure it will take a while to find what we want. The issue is that we won't be able to sell our AKV contract until late next year due to some trips that we have already committed to. I know the ideal thing is to buy the HHI points first and then sell the AKV contract, but we are also doing some major house renovations next year, so I don't know if we will have the extra cash to do that.

As far as studios, we have stayed in everything except GVs. When we have the whole family, we book a 2-BR and will want to book a 2-BR plus a 1-BR after next year since our DSs are both getting married next year. (We would choose GVs but I think we will prefer the 2-BR+1-BR scenario with us taking the 1-BR--for the elevator access and the privacy!--and the kids and their families in the 2-BR.) When it's just the two of us, we definitely prefer the 1-BR, but since we don't have a lot of points, we have to do the studio in order to get two trips. Hopefully, we won't have to do that too much longer though!

I have 420 DVC points and a 3 bedroom in HHI at Waterside by Spinnaker that I got resale about 20 years ago for almost nothing that I will have forever and my kids if they want too.

I know you want DVC, but I would just suggest to be fully knowledgeable, get a subscription to tug2.net (it's like the disboards but for ts) and read up. You can get a fabulous resale, on the beach, walk to beach or even in Shelter Cove (by DVC HHI) for probably much less than what you would get for selling all your DVC (so maybe you can keep some if wanted). Wait until end of October, November and even December right before maintenance dues are due and you will be able to find some fabulous resale in HHI at wonderful beautiful places on/by the beach.

We LOVE HHI and our dedicated 3 bedroom at Waterside and can walk to beach. I have no desire to go to HHI and have to take a shuttle to the beach since we are there for beach and golf.

Good luck! I always enjoy reading about your trips and leading up to them so I'll be following what you end up doing.

Thank you for the information. Waterside does look very nice! I am definitely lost when it comes to all the places there are to stay on the island. We do love the Shelter Cove area. We are more into the marsh than the beach. In fact, on our last trip, we went to the beach only once and for only about 30 minutes. We have no interest in selling our HHI DVC points. In fact, we will definitely add on some points there to be able to take a family trip every other year. I really look forward to taking my grandkids there and doing all the fun activities they provide. We started taking our adult kids there when they were 13 and 11 (and wish we had started sooner), so there is a lot of nostalgia there. I am very open to staying elsewhere though when we do our solo trips. I'll check out tug2.net
Have you considered renting points for your trips?
No, I probably wouldn't be interested in that. Remember, I mentioned we sometimes have to cancel due to medical issues.
