Want a lazy dog.

Get an older dog. We got an English Springer from the pound. They told us he was 4 yo. Our vet thought he was at least 7 (probably more). Now the breed is pretty high energy, but all Nelson wants do do all day is sleep in whatever room I am in. He gets very upset with me when I go from room to room because then he has to get up and follow me. Assuming he is 13 yo now (based on our vet's estimate) you can't really blame him.

Prior to him, we had a St. Bernard. She was very lazy too. She was a breeze to train and had the best disposition. HOWEVER, there was always hair and slobber everywhere and when she was in a room, she occupied the entire room.

We got a rat terrier from a breeder at 6 or 9 weeks (its been over 5 years, can't remember). She went thru the normal puppy stage of chewing things up, but she was actually pretty good to house train. She sleeps probably about 20 hours a day. Put blanket over her head and she's out like a light. She is soooo lazy. lol
I LOVE that dog to death, BUT if we ever get another dog, it will be a shelter dog like we have had in the past. There is such a HUGE difference in personality. Shelter dogs are SO grateful. Our dog has a major sense of entitlement. She is very friendly, but she has the personality of a cat. You have to kind of work to earn her affection, whereas a shelter dog is so loyal. I also disagree with those who said you don't need a dog. I think it's very wise of you to know exactly what you want in a dog and what fits your lifestyle, living situation etc. Hey, isn't it better than the thousands of people who buy cute little puppies for their kids at Christmas and then get rid of them once the cute wears off because they are too much responsibility?? (I have a friend who works for animal control, Jan/Feb is their busiest time of year for this reason alone) I think you will make a great dog owner:thumbsup2
People are too quick to get a dog based on looks alone and not consider how that breed will fit into their lifestyle. BRAVO TO YOU!!!

Get a Siberian Husky ... They're the laziest dogs ever. :rotfl: My husky and I have been up since 5:00 am and she's finally taking a nap. The naps never last long, though.

I met a Bullmastiff over the weekend! He was so sweet and so friendly but ... So huge! I couldn't get over the size! He was lazy, though. And slobbery. But so, so cute!!

I have a pretty lazy Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, especially now that she's almost 5 and well removed from puppyhood. There have been some days she was asleep on the bed when I left at 8:30, and still in the same position when we got home at 5:30. She can't get back on the bed herself, so we know she never moved!

However, all dogs, no matter how lazy, are work. Obviously some are much more than others (my best friend has border collies - much different life than me!), but they all require attention, medical care, potty breaks, some basic level of exercise and grooming, etc. Although my dog can be lazy, she still likes walks, and fetch, etc.

Ok, I read all the posts, and disagree with everyone who says I shouldn't get a dog. By trained, I meant it won't go to the bathroom in the house and won't destroy everything. I will train it somewhat though. I know I am not going to get a puppy and will walk it/run it every day since I run every day. But I just don't want a high energy dog.

Basset hound looks good, I was hoping for a mutt though, rescue/pound dogs are prettier.

Most of the bassets you'd get through a basset rescue group would be some kind of mutt (purebred would be rare).:thumbsup2

I think it depends on the dog, not the breed. I have had 4 german sheperds. 3 of them have been very active/playful/energetic, but when it was time to settle down, they would.

One of my gs' was the laziest dog I have ever seen. He just laid around all.the.time. We raised him from a puppy, just like the rest. He was the type of dog - where if you thew the ball and wanted him to fetch it - he would just sit and look at you as if to say - "you're crazy if you think I'm chasing that ball". And you would have to get it yourself.

I would ask a vet or dog trainer, their opinion. They see all types and hear a lot about dogs. Even a "shelter dog" could be a good option. The caregivers there would know the dogs personalities fairly well.

and will walk it/run it every day since I run every day.
Then our shelter wouldn't let you adopt a greyhound anyway. Greyhounds are not "runners", they are sprinters and our local shelters policy is if you are a runner, you can't have a grey because they can't take the long distance running that some people mistakenly think they "want" or "need". Good luck to you though, even if I still think a greyhound is the most awesome dog out there!

I have a whippet and a lab. I had a greyhound but unfortunately she passed away from cancer. The whippet and the greyhound, laziest dogs ever. My whippet doesn't ever want to run! All he does is lounge on the couch all day. I have to beg him to go out for a bathroom break. Greyhound was the same way.

Now, my lab, she's 10 now and just finally settling down and getting lazy. Before that, she would drive you insane in the house! I love her but I'm never getting another lab. Bring on the whippets and the greyhounds!

I agree we currently have a 12 year old Greyhound who I adopted when she was just 4 1/2. She came into our home with no problems at all, she sleeps or is laying down probably 20+ hours a day. These are awesome dogs, not much need for excersing, grooming pretty low maintenance. Some of the younger ones might have a bit more energy but I can honestly say she is a joy :)

Yes there is nothing cuter than a puppy, but that ends quickly and you have to train them and they have energy... blah blah blah too much work. I want a dog who is just happy to sit and chill, maybe a walk and a bit of fetch but for the most part just wants to chill and be lazy/loved. About what age do dogs stop having tons of energy or what type of dogs. Also, are dogs from the pound moderately trained? I would prefer not to train it either.

My daughters, Shih Tzu and Chihuahua, are the most lazy dogs I have ever seen. They just want to sit on the couch with you and chill pretty much.

oh yeah, also sadly, my location means that a siberian husky and any heavy fur dog is out.
