I went grocery shopping at Wal-Mart yesterday and used my amex blue preferred, does anyone know if this will count as a grocery store at 6%, A department store at 3% or another purchase at 1%?

I think I just found the answer to my own question - it looks like it will be at the all other of 1%. Guess I should really stick to Kroger for my groceries.

If anyone had a different experience let me know.

Yeah, I use my quick silver card at Walmart since I only get 1% from my Amex Blue Preferred. I've been shifting a lot of my grocery shopping to Target using a gift card purchased at Kroger to pay. But I still do a fair amount at Kroger.

it can vary from walmart to walmart. U have to test them to see how they code out. I have a mastercard that codes some walmart at 5x, some at 1x. You have to try it out.
I do have like 5 walmarts around me though, haha.
Alternatively, u can buy gift cards at the grocery store for walmart/target.

I'm not sure Amex ever codes Walmart as grocery. Also I've never seen Walmart gift cards at grocery stores.

I pick and choose what I buy at WM; many times their prices are more than 6% lower so that it doesn't "pay" to purchase those items at Kroger or Publix.

For me the Walmart Neighborhood Market codes as a grocery store and I get 6% cashback with my Amex, but the regular Walmart only gives me 1%. On the other hand, our Kroger is a Fred Meyer store and doesn't code as grocery, so I've switched to Safeway for my weekly grocery shopping.

If you have one of the Chase Ink cards you can get clean WM gift cards via Gyft and get 5% back or 5X UR points. The transactions are instantaneous and can be scanned from your phone at checkout. I save the $6,000 Amex cap per card for other specific grocery store purchases.
