Can anyone tell me how the Thanksgiving deals at Walmart work? We want one of the iPad minis, which Walmart says it has a "one hour in-stock guarantee" starting at 6pm. So how does that work? Do you still have to line up well in advance? I read something about individual lines for certain products and wristbands...I'd just like to know exactly how it works before jumping into the madness! :scared:

Thanks so much!

I'd love to know the answer to this too. Any Walmart employees on the board?

We did this last year. As long as you are in line anytime in the hour, you are guaranteed the product at that price. However, you are not guaranteed to get the product that night. If they run out, you are given a card (similar to a gift card) that you buy and then register online. They then notify you when the product is ready for you to pickup at the site-to-store location. I can't remember if you are guaranteed to have it before Christmas.

Ok so if I want the ipad mini which I know will sell out fast as long as I am in the line before say 7 I should get a card to purchase it and I will receive one by Christmas? What about the gift card do they give you one when you pay for the ipad? Lady year I bought the xbox with kinect deal and I received the gift card at checkout.

Please don't shop on thanksgiving just to get a deal..similar deals will be available on cyber Monday and don't mean missing a holiday with family. Sad that we cannot just let people have lives and celebrate. I know several families whose relatives now have to work on thanksgiving and they are not volunteering. I am a nurse so I have worked many holidays and do my regret it..hospitals have to be open but Walmart can wait.

The sad reality is despite the loud protests, actions speak louder than words. People pack the stores on Thanksgiving, and they spend money like crazy. In the internet age, where you can get the same items for less delivered to your front door, stores really have no choice BUT to be open when the customers want to shop.
We are a 24/7/365 society now. I worked graveyard shift (11 pm to 7 am) from 1980 to 2005. In 1980, my only eating option at 2am was Denny's. By 2005 almost every fast food place has the drive through open 24 hours, and many grocery stores are open 24 hours.
There is even a software development firm here in town with flexible work hours......the most popular work week schedule, 40 hours straight! :scared1:

What kind of deal is Walmart having on the iPad mini?

I work retail and we are opening at 8:00 so I will be headed to work. If I wasn't working I wouldn't go out.

Do you think they will have better deals on the iPad mini on cyber Monday?

We do have a choice and Costco and nordstroms will not be open..consumers drive it...sad things are so important...

For the 1hr guarantee you have to be in line before the 1hr mark. So you must be in line before 7pm. I'm also going for the iPad mini but I don't care if I get Thursday or later on, I just want the good price.

My family eats at 1:00 on Thanksgiving Day. By 8:00 that night, we are back home and have our Christmas tree up.

We are the same as the pp. We eat early and then start dragging out the Christmas decorations. We have no family locally so it's just our family.

I am undecided as to whether I'll head out to shop at 6pm on Thanksgiving. I'd prefer not to but worried we won't see those types of deals on another day including Cyber Monday. I'm not so concerned about my own time but I do feel badly for all the retail workers who are forced to work and be away from their families. Unfortunately, it is the consumer who needs to send the message that we aren't interested in shopping nor are willing to give up Thanksgiving and that is not going to happen. Many people LOVE that they can go shop late on Thursday and not have to go out so early on Friday. So, this will continue and to stay home and 'send a message' isn't really gonna do much other than just make you feel better personally that you didn't participate. And that is where I am. Debating whether not participating just to make myself feel better is worth the $100 more you are going to pay for the ipad mini later.

Just because it is a big deal to you does not mean it is to others. Not everyone has a big family dinner to attend. Some eat Thanksgiving "lunch" and are in their PJ's in front of the TV by the time these sales are started.

Now if you (or anyone else) does not want to participate in BF (I know I won't be, not sale is worth it for me) then don't. But do not push you values on others.

I worked in a hospital for years and did my share of holidays. My husband also works in a 24/7 industry and has missed Christmas, birthdays, and other holidays because of work, so I definitely can relate to it. But if I didn't have to go in until 4 or 5 pm on a holiday, I'd be thrilled! By that time, most people have had their meal celebrations...Walmart's paying their employees time and a half, giving them (another?) hot turkey dinner, AND they get 25% off purchases! I bet the employees are fighting for that shift - sounds like a good deal to me!

So call me evil, but I'll be there Thanksgiving day...with millions of other people, I'm sure!

Walmart also hosted a food drive for it's own employees since so many of them live below the poverty line/on assistance due to non-living wages so I wouldn't be too quick to pat Walmart on the back for it's thanksgiving employee bonus.
