Walking to Downtown Disney

i know DD opens earlier than the parks. Is it safe to assume you can walk from the hotels on Harbor through the plaza area? And how early? Is it correct that you go thru security there?

You yes, you can easily walk thru the Esplanade area and into Downtown Disney area, we get our morning Starbucks that way.

I am not sure how early security starts, but we have been through the area an hour before park opening and have gone through, with little delay.

The great part is the security change on the Downtown Disney side has moved to the West side of DTD, and you only have to cross it once.

DtD security (at both the east and west checkpoints) is supposed to open when the Starbucks locations in DtD open. I don't know how accurate that is, having read a few reports earlier in the year that said the security CMs were unaware of that even though Disney announced it. Things are probably much more in sync by now.
