It is official!

You would think after 2 injury seasons, that I would know better. But NOPE! Still thought I could run this one!

I am still in PT for my lower back/sacrum/psoas funny business. My good friend who treats me sometimes suggested my body may be giving me a message that I shouldn't be running.

The next day, I did my 8 mile jaunt...with 100% walking. (tempted to jog even just a little, but was a good little girl!). I finished in regulation at 15:35ish pace. Not too bad since I hadn't done any walking training.

So hopefully this is a sign for me.

Though on the way home as I crossed the bridge to beachside, I saw the runners for the Space Coast Triathlon. Aaah yes I was jealous B/c they could run and I can't. But I did see a few walkers. Some who looked like they were walking with a purpose and on purpose. Others who looked like they were walking b/c they had too. Very fit muscular hunky guys who looked like maybe they had some secret injury they were hiding. You know the ones. Sad faced, slow walk (albeit--at a gazelle pace compared to my clydesdale trot). But hey, they benefitted all of women kind by providing a longer time to look at them. :lmao:

But I am a walker! I am a walker! I am a walker!!!

And my training plan won't include anything that has both feet off the ground at the same time. (that would be a run--and did you know a disqualification for a racewalking event???)

And like windwalker said--instead of being an injured runner who walks...I will be a walker who walks. (okay, maybe he didn't say it like that...I can't remember!:confused3 )

Hubby thought it was funny that I Had the post-walk aches b/c I had to use more muscles to keep my fanny moving. And he appreciates that he can knock down to only 3 training days just so that he can accompany me for the full.

I am really truly walking!!! So who's with me?

You will have plenty of good company Lisa. There is are a bunch of us who take our walking seriously. It's a different sport with different challanges but it shares the same goal, getting to the finish line and having the most fun possible.:cool1:

Now that PatsFan Bill has his game plan all mapped out, he will go "BeepBeep" like a roadrunner when he passes a runner then moon them. Please don't tell anyone I told you though, I don't want him to find out I tattled on him.

Lisa, glad that you are going to play! Good for you for knowing that you can walk and working toward that goal! You go!

I am a waker and proud of it. I have walked 2 previous and will walk my 3rd in Jan(even with a bum knee). I walked WDW marathon in 96 at 5:09 and walked a 50 miler in 10:32.

Be proud of finishing. Thta's the goal for everyone. Not evereone can do 26 miles no matere how they do it. Some people have a problem driving 26 miles:eek:

I hope you find you'll enjoy walking the event -- I always have a great time, though I will never be a terribly speedy walker. I find walking paces can vary quite widely just like running paces do. Some folks seem to walk past me effortlessly, and sometimes I can walk past folks who are running. Go figure!

Enjoy your race at your pace! Just make sure you're ahead of the sweeps (a minimum 15-minute pace is good, 'cause it gives you time to take some character photos along the way) and have a blast!

I didn't see to many walkers passing you lady. You are like a little machine when you get in your grove.

Me! Me! I'm a walker.

I've done three half-marathons and my first full is planned for this Saturday, October 13. After that it's the Goofy! :cool1:

Welcome to the club! You'll enjoy it.

Lisa, I totally know how you feel. Whenever I run, I get knee pain that requires hours of icing. The new thing now is arch pain. I have a hard time walking - even though I enjoy it better. I can actually enjoy the scenery and what I am doing. But I have to keep telling myself to walk and not run...

Anyway, I am planning on walking the full. I am doing the half with my sister, so we will go with her pace - prob a walk/run combo. My guess is around 3:00 - 3:15 for the half. Then I am walking the full and I am just gonna try to keep Robert & Linda and Dave & Erica in my view to keep me going. My goal is to just finish!

See you there!

Becky

I guess my plan is to keep Becky in my sight to keep me going. :thumbsup2

I will definitely be walking all of the 1/2 (well, actually, i have my own "style" -- I walk till I get to a character I want a picture with, stop for the picture, then trot till I catch up with whoever i was keeping pace by, and then repeat) and will walk most of the full (I jog from time to time when my walking muscles scream for mercy).

Welcome to the club, and good for you for re-tooling and motivating yourself with a new perspective! Seems like there will be plenty of company to keep us moving.

We will be doing a 3:20 1/2 and a finish Full for the Goofy. My knee is hopefully going to survuve the Goofy and than the knife when I get home. Plan to rehab so I can do the Minnie Double:)

Becky, come do the full with us. We hung with Lily and Pat fo the later parts of the full.

My goal is to finish the Goofy on both feet but if I cross the finish line on my hands and knees I will count that a victory. If you come across my staggering body would you please ask me to walk with you?

Also, Good for you. Too many people are full of excuses when it comes to exercise. They figure since they can't run or they can't run fast that they have the perfect excuse to sit on the couch.

You will more than likely be happier and have a much better time than I will. Sadly, I am just not as smart as you, therefore, I will attempt to run more than I should and it will hurt me.

At the very least just step over me and try not to laugh.

We're not doing the Goofy, but Nancy (padisneyfan) and I will be walking every step of the Mickey. It's going to be the first full marathon for both of us. I'm not sure how we'll do, but when the event comes around we will have been training hard for a year, so that should count for something. Barring any unforeseen injury, at this point I think my success is more mental than physical. I am so focused right now, it would take a herd of cattle to keep me from continuing. When it's all over and done, I may never do this again, but I'm not thinking about that right now.

Thanks Robert, I will take you up on that :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2 I went out this morning for 5.4 miles and walked it - it was so enjoyable! I even stopped listening to my ipod after mile 1 and just took in my surroundings. My pace was 14:02. I felt like I could've gone for hours :cheer2:

What is wrong with your knee?

I had surgery in 2005...bumping me from the full to the half (thank goodness for Team in Training--I had plenty of time to make that decision). It was night and day post surgery and thanks to that...I CAN actually walk in regulation. Before then it was a pipe dream as the knee inhibited my walking speed (could only maintain 19 min miles DESPITE running seemingly fine).

Hopefully with my physical therapy correcting weakness in my back and left hamstring--I should be a speedy walker come January. :)

Here is what my MRI showed:

The Bad news is(Notes from Radiologist and DR):

1) Poorly defined tear to the articular cartilage overlying the medial femoral condyle.(This is why I went to DR for and will have operated on)
2) Markedly lax appearance of the anterior cruciate ligament probably representing an old stretching tear. Functionality of the ligament appears compromised due to its lax appearance.
3)Small knee joint effusion
4)Old partial tear to the fibular collateral ligament
5) Patellar tendinitis
