Walking SoG to Polynisian Resort

I'm just curious, because we are staying at the Poly, what is SoG? Also, is your name Kelly? That is my name, I have tinkerbell as my avatar too! ; ) When will you be there? We are going in October. :Pinkbounc

Is this doable? They look like they are very close on the resort maps.

yes, not only is it do-able...it is very pleasant (except when the weather is NOT :) ) It takes about 10 minutes to walk from SoG to the Poly. to get to the monrail station, just go in the lobby and take the elevator upstairs--the monrail station is outside.

Thanks for the replies! Yes, my name is Kelly too! SoG is Shades of Green and we will be staying there from 23-29 May, Can't wait! I'm glad that the walk wouldn't be bad from SoG to the Polynesian....as the first night we plan on eating at the 'Ohanu. Is the Polynesian closer to walk to than the TTC? Thanks again!

Shades of Green. It was previously the Disney Inn, before that it was the Golf Resort. The Department of Defense took it over several years ago and now it is available only to active/retired military folks and employees of the DoD. From what I understand, it is a wonderful resort. However it is currently under construction and is expected to be up and running by March of 04.

I have heard of Shades of Green, I just forgot about it...probably since we could never use the facilities, since we aren't military. So my sister and her husband (retired Navy) could use the facilities? Do they give special rates? It sounds really nice. I was just curious.

GOD BLESS OUR TROOPS and the USA!!!! :Pinkbounc :bounce:

LOL @ other Kelly! Sorry, your VFW membership dosen't count, though it's very admireable! :)

Yes, if you are retired military you can use the facilities, and you can also be their guest, as long as they are there with you! The rates are great, they are on a sliding scale, according to your grade/pay rate. The Passporter has SoG listed as a "Deluxe" resort, and we will only have to pay $105 a day (with no taxes!). This is great for a single mom like myself!

Thanks for all your replies...it's really nice, and hope to make a few cyber-friends.

DH and I are both Department of Defense employees, and are reaping the benefits from SoG. In two weeks (hooray!) we'll be paying $104 a night to stay at the Contemporary Resort while the SoG resort is under construction.

Yes, we did this all the time when we were there - and we had young kids at the time (2, 5, 8). It was about a 5 or 10 minute walk depending on how much time we spent looking at the alligators in the pond on the way over there!
I will say that we took the bus straight back to SOG a lot at night, though, because the kids were so tired that we couldn't see making them walk back from the Poly! But we did use the monorail from the Poly every morning when we were well rested!

Hi Kel!! Its Kelly! ha ha!! Thanks for your reply. Sniff, sniff. Oh well, I am just happy that you get to take advantage of those great rates! So you've stayed there before? I'll definately have to tell my sister in law about this place. I think that a lot of people think that if you go to WDW you have to have little kids, I've been trying to explain to her that a lot of adults go by themselves (her girls are both grown, in fact one just got her PHD and one is married and works for the airlines, she can fly down there for nothing! they just started flying to Orlando!)

Thanks! Have a great trip! Kelly from Alaska (PS~how many kids? Or is it just kid?) ours are 11 and 8, girl and boy.

Yes it is. The TTC is on the other side of the Polynesian.

mog,
I agree with taking the bus back to SOG at night. In 95 we caught the monorail from MK to Poly thinking we would walk back to SoG. HA - when you are tired you really don't feel like walking. Sometimes even the walk from the front of the hotel to the room seems like miles. We didn't do that one again. Our kids (own + nieces & nephews) were 8, 8, 10, 12, 13, but still it is a long walk when you are tired.

We did walk over there one year on our first evening and had a drink and then walked back. That was a nice walk because we weren't tired for a full day in the park. We had arrived in the afternoon and hadn't gone anywhere but DTD.

Thanks a lot for the tips! I love to learn from those who have already "been there & done that". I can already feel my dogs hurting! Thanks again.

Thanks for inquiring about the boys Kelly, they are 10 & 13 and run me ragged! BUT they keep me young! (It's nice when you're 44 and have younger kids, people think you're younger too!) ;)

Kel, I'm going to be 42 this month (20th) so anymore I think 40's are young! Remember back to when we used to think that it sounded so old?? ha ha!! I didn't have my first until I was 31...they do keep me busy! After our Orlando trip, we are heading to St. Louis and then onto Palmyra (don't know if you've heard of it~north of Hannibal) to visit my husband's relatives. My MIL and FIL keep a house there on a "farm" an old family farm that they bought back from family a while back. They are retired, live up in Alaska like we do, but they head down to MO a couple of times a year, and stay for months at a time. Where are you in MO? Kelly

Hi, Kelly!

Definitely do the bus at night! I stayed at SoG when I was 10 and it was the Golf Resort. We walked back to the hotel after the Polynesian Luau and encountered a fox! It was funny to watch my grandmother freak out and I still laugh about it today, but it was kind of dangerous when I think about it. My mother carried my unusually large 2 year-old sister all the way back and did just fine. It's a beautiful, short walk during the day; amazing flamingos...gosh, way too long ago!

Have a great time. Dina

Thanks for dropping by!

Dina, I can just picture your grandma freeking out because of the fox! I would do the same thing, thinking it had rabies and would attack. :)

Kelly - yeah, 40's definitely isn't as "old" as it was when I was 20. lol

Me and the boys live in Saint Robert, MO, which is about 100 miles west of St. Louis. I work for the Army at beautiful Fort Lost-in-the-Woods (Fort Leonard Wood)

It must be neat living in Alaska. I've encountered several people in the military that have been stationed in Alaska, and they have nothing but good to say about it.

Best wishes everyone!

Kel

maridw,
I had to laugh when you mentioned the walk back to the room at SOG! We were always so happy to get back to the hotel until we realized we still had a long way to go since our room was about as far from the front entrance as you could get! Funny how it always seemed longer at night after a long day at the parks!
