Walking from Wilderness Lodge to TTC

I am going to be staying at the Wilderness Lodge for the first time in September and am trying to figure out whether it will be possible to walk to the TTC. I searched this forum and found many people asking the same question. Inevitably about two people respond saying that you absolutely cannot do it because there are no sidewalks (there are grassy areas on the side, so I don't see why this is a big deal). I don't know about you guys, but where I come from (New Jersey) people walk, jog, run on the side of streets without sidewalks all the time. I do it for miles at a time along streets with shoulders and no grassy areas on the side. To matter of factly say you can't walk along a street because there are no sidewalks sounds, to me, like saying you can't drive because its raining. After looking on Google maps, I see that this would involve walking along Wilderness Road and then Topiary Lane (both of which are minor roads with grassy areas on their sides). So I know this walk would in fact be easy and completely safe for me. What I am wondering is if anyone has any good reason to believe that security would swoop down and stop people walking along wilderness road. Has anyone ever heard of this happening? I appreciate any information anyone might have about this.

To my knowledge it's prohibited by Disney, but I don't know how enforced that is. I'd imagine it's a kin to jaywalking - you hear about it, but rarely does anyone get dinged for it.

I think the other cautions about doing this are that most roadways are more like highways, so there's the danger factor. You wouldn't walk on the freeway at home so why would you at Disney. Sounds like you're familiar with the area and know for fact the roads you'd need to travel are NOT highways, though.

Another thing I've read is that if you walk through the grass, you run the risk of snakes/spiders/etc which are often found in areas not frequently traveled around WDW.

You could always just boat to CR and monorail to TTC.

I agree that it's generally prohibited by Disney, especially if you're walking along backstage roads. It's also worth noting that there are no crosswalks to get across World Drive and I would think it would be pretty dangerous to try and run across the road.

Disney does not allow guest to walk along the grassy areas along side the roadways. And yes security will stop you from doing it. Why not just take the boat from the Wilderness Lodge over to MK and then get on the monorail. The monorail goes to the TTC. :confused3

I'm used to walking where I'm allowed to walk, and Disney, a sovereign country in the state of Florida, has made it so its guests can't walk between TTC-WL. If Disney had wanted guests to walk it would have built crosswalks.

Is it physically possible to do so? Yes, but it wouldn't be my choice. You're in an area that's a) backstage and b) a bus route, where drivers will be traveling at high speeds and not expecting to see pedestrians.

A bus driver may report you to security, or you may be spotted by security if they happen to drive by. They do pick up people who are wandering around in pedestrian-unfriendly areas, I don't know how often.

:scared1: I would just take the boat to the monorail

I would think that security would try to stop you because it's dangerous and you're on their property. As others have mentioned, the roads you're referring to are bus routes, and if the ones I have in mind are the ones you're referring to, they're very narrow and you're not really going to have a grass strip to walk along the side of the road, particularly on Wilderness Road. That's a narrow road with a lot of swampy land and trees around it, and I think that it would be very hard to see a guest walking along the side of the road.

But go ahead...try it, and report back your experiences. Heh.

1. Disney says don't do it.
2. You would be in a high traffic area used by buses and risk being hit.
3. Lack of crosswalks and pedestrian walk lights at intersections.
4. The entire place is a huge wildlife refuge set in a swamp
5. A rather significant population of free roaming critters including venomous snakes and alligators.
6. BIG alligators. Mean venomous snakes (water mocassins). I'm willing to bet you don't have to concern yourself with them back in Joisey..

And I'm wondering, too, why you would want to walk to the TTC rather than boat or bus to a park.

Can you physically do it? - Yes
Is it safe? - No
Will you get stopped by security? Possibly if not probably.
Why? Because it is not safe.
There is no possible plus to walking from WL to the TTC. It will take much longer vs. taking Disney transportation and it will put yourself in danger.

Thanks for the replies. I would ordinarily use the boat to/from the Contemporary and connect to/from the monorail from there, but I can envision a scenario in which that could no longer be an option. I traditionally like to walk to the Polynesian from the Grand Floridian for a late night dole whip and since the Wilderness Lodge is so close to the TTC and Poly, I was hoping this would be possible on my upcoming trip. I'm not sure how late the boats between the Contemporary and Magic Kingdom and Wilderness Lodge run, so even walking around the Poly and GF after a late dinner at Ohana or 1900 Park Fare could be a problem. I know the monorail runs until an hour after the latest park closing, but that can be pretty early depending on MK hours. I was thinking this grass I saw on Google Maps would be the well-manicured grass I am used to seeing all over Disney property, but if it is overgrown and swampy I wouldn't attempt it. Does anyone know the schedule for how late the boats operate? Does it vary based on park hours?

The Red Flag boats that run between WL and MK run until an hour and a half after MK closes.

The Blue Flag boats that go between WL, Ft. Wilderness and CR run until 11:30PM.

1. There's been at least two incidences of pedestrians hit on the side of the road since I've been on the boards, both times they were walking on non side walked roads.

2. Snakes love grass....it's Florida and swampy with lots of grass....lots of snakes in Florida. I wouldn't walk in the grass on the side of the road if you paid me.

Aside from the snakes ( and yes, some particularly nasty one's reside on the grounds ) You'd have to try and cross a major highway to get to the TTC.

So you wanted to do this AT NIGHT?????!!!!!:scared1:
Bad enough to contemplate this during daylight, but in the dark???????
Please, if you are that desperate for a Dole Whip at midnight, take a taxi.

Late at night? No way would I even consider it. Since that's a back road, there probably won't even be streetlights. Please don't be walking on an unlit road, with buses whizzing by, when the drivers won't be looking for pedestrians.

Not to mention the critters you won't be able to see in the grass. I have a friend who lives near the parks and gets a fascinating assortment of venomous snakes crossing his concrete driveway. I'm sure there are a few in that grass along the roads at night.

Take a cab. It's probably around $15-20 round trip, maybe less, and well worth it.

Note that with the construction going on at the Poly, the temporary Capt Cook's location is not serving Dole Whips, so there may be no point in heading to the Poly for one during your September trip.

About a year ago we had driven over for dinner at the GF...when we left...after exiting the GF and going onto the first road a family was walking the side of road...
really is was so dark and unexpected i could imagine them getting hit....i did see a Disney truck stopping and approaching them....unless they all jumped in the bed of the truck there was no room...
I dont know what happened but walking in non designated areas in Disney is just plan...dumb...

I've stayed at WL a few times. OP, since this is your first stay at WL, I'll acquaint you with the WL surroundings. Of course it has a western lodge them, so there are lots and lots of trees, and large grassy areas between WL and the TTC. There are also medium sized lakes to the north of both WL and TTC. Water + trees + high grass = snakes galore. There are other creatures that don't get along well with humans, but snakes are enough to keep me on Disney transportation. There is also literally no way to get between the two without crossing World Drive, a very busy road with no crosswalks on Timberline or Wilderness Drive. These roads (and the rights of way alongside them) are simply not meant for pedestrian traffic at any time of day, but at night walking along them or in the right of way would be incredibly foolish.

I suppose it's possible, but very ill-advised. It's very understandable Disney security would attempt to keep it from happening if they see it. I don't understand what the problem is in taking the nice boat over to the Contemporary and then the monorail to the Poly. I actually wish there was a safe pedestrian path between the two, but Disney (presumably due to the high cost of doing so) has not created one.

But if you're not convinced by everyone on here, then I'm anxious to read how it goes for you. Any photos you can post of the wildlife you see along the way would be appreciated. :thumbsup2
