Walking canes in The World

Hi there, I have a quick question regarding walking canes while at WDW.

Back story: I have Lupus and have had a harder year this year with flares than I did last year during our visit. Last year, never needed a cane, didn't even bring it to Orlando with me. Could hike for miles and do great. This year, I am not so lucky. While I am no where in need of an ECV, I do think that I may need my cane for long standing times (like watching the movie in China pavilion).

The question: Stick with my solid non-collapsible cane (which I think would be very heavy to tote all over if only occasionally needed) or buy a folding cane? And if you do agree with folding, do they sell Disney themed or cute ones anywhere at WDW? Is there a mobility store? :rotfl:

Follow up question: If I stick with my heavier cane, what do I do with it when I want to ride something?

Thanks in advance! :goodvibes

Before I upgraded to using a pair of forearm crutches, I used a collapsible cane. I really liked it a lot because I could just fold it up and tuck it in my bag in the event I didn't need it. That said, at Disney (or Universal, in this case) I didn't collapse it every time I went on a ride, I just propped it up against the wall near the exit. Mine didn't stay collapsed because the inner rope part was elastic, so unless I put it in the carrying bag it came with, it liked to... un-collapse itself.

At WDW, on most attractions, you would be able to bring it with you into the ride.
If you need to leave it, ask the CM at boarding what to do. In most cases, they should move it to the exit if you will not be unloading at the same place as the attraction boards.

You might want to consider a forearm crutch instead of a cane. It offers more support and it also allows you to have your hands free when you need them (like opening a door, etc.) You can take either a cane or a crutch on the ride with you most of the time. I know at Soarin' they had me put mine on the floor directly under the ride vehicle. It was there when we "landed."

Dh used a collapsable cane. He found it easy to fold up and tuck away foe any ride

Thanks everyone for the replies! :goodvibes Since we leave late tomorrow night, I am going to take my regular cane with me and see how I do with it. If it doesn't work for me, I will find a folding one to put in my bag. Never thought about a forearm crutch, thanks for that advice, I will look at those too. Luckily I will have my car with me and can get off property to find one if needed. :thumbsup2

Thanks again! :)
