I am currently in a walking boot, I go back to ortho about 10 days before we leave for WDW. This is an injury from 12/08 that hasn't gotten better so I went to an ortho that specializes in ankles and he put me in this for 4-6 weeks....6 weeks will be our trip time.

anyways...I am going to assume that I have to take it off to go thru security or do I?? Anyone have any experiences? I am "allowed" to take it off to drive, sleep and bathe (as it's my right foot).

Not sure how we're going to be at WDW other than taking it slow. If it bugs me, will have to get an ECV, as hubby will be pushing 2 of our little ones in the stroller.

UGH...never thought when I booked this trip in January, I still wouldn't be better.

You do not have to take it off. Basically if it trips the magnometer they will then hand wand you. That is no big deal. Whjen I fly and am not taking my ECV with me I have to be hand wanded as I cannot take my shoes off when I am standing (and I have a metal hip anyway). And if it does not have metal in it the sscanner should not be tripped.

Also, you might want to get a wheelchair from the door of the airport to the plane, and they will meet you at the aircraft on arrival with another wheelchair. It is just that the person pushing the chair will normally get about a $5-$10 tip.

Most airports from entry to aircraft door are really long. I know Orlando is.

Sorry to hear you will need to travel with a walking boot.
You should not have any problems with security.
Here is a link to a Transportation Security Website page that should help you out.

The Orlando airport is pretty big, so you will probably want to contact your airline about getting wheelchair assistance to get to/from the gates.

If you need information about renting an ECV, check out post #2 of the disABILITIES FAQs thread.

Hope you have a great trip despite a little unexpected detour.

As one who has been in a boot quite a lot lately (7 out of the last 12 months), I don't know how you would be able to walk in one all day. I know for me after 15-20 minutes of walking and standing I can't take it anymore. Those things are not the most padded and comfortable things to wear let alone walk in.

You might want to consider arranging for an ECV. You and your family will be much happier with it.

My mother wears a leg brace and has to take it off every time she goes through. They let her walk through the metal detectors, then lead her to a special screening area where she can sit down and remove the brace. Then she has to stand up and they scan her with the hand wand. Often they swab the brace, too. We have flown several times over the past two years and this has been what she has had to do. I would plan on having to remove the boot. It's a bit of a hassle, so give yourself a little extra time getting through security.

As the TSA folks do not qualify as medical experts on an individual's ability to accommodate the TSA with regards to the removal of a medically necessary device such as a leg brace or a "boot" I would say (and I have worn a leg brace for over 40 years, which should qualify me to expound on the subject) that, barring their inability to determine exposure to explosive materials by another method, removing the medical device is not their business to request. I do not remove mine and, if asked, I refuse. Period.
