How do those those that walk a reso do it when borrowing? If you have to start in advance which causes you to borrow points throughout the process and then land your desired timeframe, what happens if your desired dates require less points then were required throughout the "walking" process? Do you forfeit these points if they cannot be used before your next vacation year?

For example, if I need to borrow points from 2016 that I won't need to use once I land the final reso for a trip to take place in 2015 what happens to those points I borrowed to bridge me through the process?

Borrowing is a final transaction, meaning if you borrow points for a reservation you're walking, they must stay in the UY they were borrowed into. What you can do is bank the current-year points to the following year to replace those. But they would have to be used the following year (you couldn't bank them again).

I wouldn't borrow points to walk that I wouldn't be using for my reservation- it would not be worth losing their functionality to me. I guess you have to decide if the use of those points means more to you than the room you are trying for or if having that perfect reservation is worth losing the points.

Thanks to you both. I've never walked a reso nor have I needed to, however looking at it really raised this situation to my attention and I didn't recall seeing this listed as a downside before.

You shouldn't need to use extra points on the original ressie. Just book for fewer days. Then when you get to the check in date you want, add the days. So, if you're going for a week, for example, you could book 6 days at 11 months + 10 or however far out you're going to walk from. One you get to 11 months, add a day to your trip .... It'll still be locked up for you since the day your adding is 11 +7 for everyone else and they can't start a ressie on that day, they can only add to an existing one which couldn't be your room since you already have that one...
I hope that makes sense...
