Walking across UY?

It seems that the heated debates from a few years back about whether walking a reservation is moral/ethical have pretty much subsided at this point and walking is mostly accepted as a fact of life (love it or hate it).

I was recently thinking about a scenario that I don't think I'd ever considered previously and curious if anyone else has considered this particular circumstance (walking across the UY). Maybe it's been discussed here before, but I couldn't find it.

Given the usually tight availability in the Fall, I was considering walking a reservation for next October. I've done short walks on a few reservations in the past but was considering starting a little sooner for this one. Then it occurred to me... I have a SEP UY. The October reservation I would be landing on would need to use UY24 points. My UY23 points are all used/spoken for.

That means I would need to wait until the 1st of October and start the walk with a Sep 1st check-in date so that I'm able to access/use the UY24 points, correct? Otherwise, I would have to borrow points into UY23 to start the walk with an August check-in. That's a problem because then those points are permanently in UY23 and not eligible to be used for the actual dates I would be walking to.

I recall that booking a reservation across UYs is already complicated, but if it's just temporarily crossing the UY during a walk and will eventually all be in the next UY, that adds another wrinkle.

Am I correct that starting the walk with a check-in date prior to Sep 1st would paint me into a corner? Are there other factors related to this that I haven't considered? Thanks!

You have it correct. You cannot walk across use years unless you are willing to risk "stranding" points in the use year the walk begins or unless you can use/rent those points for another trip before they expire.

If you want to walk across a use year, you have to call MS to do it.

I usually recommend a use year two months prior to actual planned use if you think you will have to walk to get a reservation.

Since you don’t have any 2023 points to use temporarily to start the walk, you have to wait.

What you describe is one of main rules to walking: you can begin a walk by making a reservation that starts no earlier than the first day of the use year during which your intended trip will take place

I have several days of the Thanksgiving week already booked but I have a December year. If I want to continue the reservation into December and/or walk it forward a week can MS actually do this if I call? I have both 2023 and 2024 points available.

Yes MS can do it for you to cross the UY, but you will need to call to modify until you get all dates in December. Then the system will like you move on your own.

The 2023 points will need be be banked at some point don’t need to worry about that until you are asking them to move it up a start date of Dec 1st.
