I had some cheap Binatone ones over there a couple of years ago and they work fine. For this year Ive got a really dinky set of Motorola ones from Ebuyer for less than £20 with a 5km range!

This was discussed recently in this thread. There is some info there regarding frequencies used etc. In short you are not really allowed to use UK frequency walkie talkies outside of Europe. If you choose to do so you will be "visiting" the amateur radio frequency over there.

Hope that helps,

Charlotte

hi all thanks for the info , me thinks the brotherinlaws offer of the walkies will be be declined ....

cause id be the one in million who gets nabbed by the sheriff

harryc, I read somewhere on here that walkie talkies are cheap over there, places like walmart stock them.

One draw back is that quite a few US visitors use them, so depending on when you visit, the airwaves may be a little congested. Likewise, we can't use their frequencies in the UK.

Harry, buy some over there in walmart they are so cheap, we bought some a couple of years ago and wished we'd bought them years ago! we use them in the parks and in walmart when we all go off in different directions.
I'm sure ours were something like 12 dollars .
if you buy more expensive ones with more channels on then then you are less likely to be stuck on the same channel as evryone else in wdw ;)

on this trip (and last summer as well) we've seen a lot of people using Nextel push to talk, but i haven't noticed as many people with walkie talkies....but i'm probably not paying attention...

but i'm sure it would be useful to keep in contact if you plan on splitting up....we tend to stay together so it's not an issue...and we both carry mobiles which we can use on the off chance we get seperated....

We're travelling as a group of nine this year - 2 families - so we won't stay together all of the time even though we'll probably be in the same park - I had considered walkie talkies as we all have tri band mobiles but I'd hate tho think how much it costs to ring each other on them!

Maybe I'll check some out in Walmart on day one :0)

Have a look HERE

I think this a small selection of what you will find in-store.

I got a US set that were classified as "GMRS" up to 7 mile range about 3 years ago. They have 22 channels (x 38 sidechannels/privacy codes). There are some of these channels that can be high powered to give you the 7 miles but officially you need a GMRS licence to operate them.

I'll let you guys decide for yourself if you think this is worth the risk or not to use them without the licence!!!!

hi there and thanks freaky for the info ..

wow a set for less than 20 dollars and i take it simple /cheap ones like this wont need a licence cause they are similar to the cheap ones you get in this country ....

def will give it consideration

cheers again

harry

harry, no licence needed. have a look on the walmart website for the cost of walkie talkies, they are a good buy! :flower:
