Given that the ship is steel everywhere, how well do FRS radios work on board? Can you really be on different decks as well as different areas and still chat?

Thanks....

Hi, we went on our first cruise last January and we brought out two-way radios and had no luck being able to talk to each other, but I did see alot of people using them so I am not sure if ours weren't good enough or what but from what I hear, some work some don't, but would love to know which ones work because we are going again in January and would like to get some because they would be alot of help on the ship! Thanks! Good Luck!

They worked great. We reached the kids everytime, except maybe once or twice, and we simply walked a few feet and were able to get through.

the T6220's also offer a feature that "scrambles" the conversation so others (without 6000 series Motorolas) can't understand what's being said. This is in addition to the "sub-channels" that other FRS radios use. Another neat feature was "Quiet-6000", which was a Squelching feature so other conversations wouldn't come through our radios. This combined with a vibrating attention tone allowed us to use the readios anywhere without disturbing others.

When we bought ours last year, then were $69 each. Now OfficeMax and Staples has them for $29 each.

We like them alot.

I did notice that Motorola has a new series of radios that use a "Dual" frequency band. The normal 2-watt (I think) FRS freqeuncies, and then the higher output 5-watt frequencies, depending on which channel is selected. These higher output frequencies require an FCC license to use, but I assume it''s just a form that need to be filed with the FCC.
(I bet a lot of people take the time to fill that out, yeah, right!)

Can kids take the walkie talkie with them to the kids clubs so we can communicate with them?

Both our kids had them in the clubs with no problems. Funny you should mention the clubs. The pager they give you from the club was less reliable than our radios. Go figure...

We have the Motorola T6220's also. Highly recommend them. Note the higher wattage radios (not the Motorola T6220's ) require an FCC license that is not free. This distance you get from these radios is primary determined by terrain and altitude, not wattage, so I would just stick with the FRS radios.

You can get them from many places, I got mine from Amazon.

You will find a few areas on the ship where they don't work well, but mostly they work fine. They also work for ports of call.

Ours worked great too:) If Hubby and I were doing different things, we could call and meet halfway. They were especially convienent when he made Palo brunch ressies, he had to call me to find a different time.
