Walkie Talkie's in Park?

Strange question I know..but was wondering anyone has tried to use walkie-talkies in the DLR. My daughter has a set of princess ones, ofcourse, and I was wondering if the range would work to try and stay connected with our group.(versus using cell phones to find each other all the time) Any thoughts?

We took our motorola ones ONCE. We found them to be hard to hear and its hard to find a channel that isnt already in use. We found our cell phones to be much easier.

Make sure you dont use professional ones. Disney has a huge radio network.

Now we used our walkie talkies in WDW (w/in the same park of course) and yes you did get some interferrence (sp?) like other people, but we only used them when we split up & they were fine. They served their purpose!

I also got the kids "ID INSIDE" wristbands to wear (they have a card tucked inside with cell numbers for myself, my husband and my mom). This way, if (heaven forbid) one of the kids gets lost, a cast member can call us immediately.


(I'll pass the bracelets along to you when we get back if we can manage a hand-off...there are extra cards that came with them...) You can put the bands on wrists or ankles, and they seem pretty comfy.

I made my daughter a bracelet last year with the alpha numbers and letters that way it was special to wear.

We use cells but sometimes still don't get great coverage inside the park.

For kids - the heart shaped pet tags can be attached easily to shoes and stay put - and you can have your name and cell engraved on it. I like those because it's really hard to damage the metal tags or for scratches/water/etc. to cause a problem. Additionally it's something to think of that's small rather than writing your personal information (or your child's) on a t-shirt that everyone can see in lines, etc. Make sure to teach your kids to show people the tag/ID/whatever you use since if they did get lost they may be crying and not easily understood.

When using cell phones (as most folks i'm sure do)....Just be sure that both (or all) of your cell phone plans are able to SEND & RECEIVE nationwide calls.

We went to Disneyworld a few years ago and my sister n laws plan charged for outbound calls when she was out of state. She got nailed with about $60 in charges (but it could have been way worse if her husband hadn't remembered they had a goofy plan - a couple of days into the trip - & turned their phones off.)

Yeah Ive never used walkie talkies, but when I was waiting for the fireworks to start the people beside me had them and said they were a pain as they kept picking up other signals from Disney workers who had them. They relied more on their cell phones then they did walkie talkies.

We took walkie-talkies once as well. There were so many that had them that you heard everyone's conversations. I have heard that if you get really good ones with multiple privacy channels they work better. At one point, my DH was trying to find out where we were and they guy next to him was on the same channel. The guy next to him said, "HEY- get off my channel." Like you can reserve one? We just use our cells now though.

My husband was upset with me on the last trip when I wouldn't take my cell phone with me and wanted to leave it in the hotel room. I kept getting the "what if I want to reach you?" line. I figured with a 2 year old it's hard enough running through the park, we'll meet at the time I said and where I said. lol... I think I actually enjoy not having the cell phone unless there are big parties. Just agree upon a meeting place in advance in case you can't find each other.

We use walkie talkies all the time. Reception is a little fuzzy between parks (I was in DCA getting FPs while the rest of the family were riding rides in DL) but other than that, no problem.

We will be using our cell phones as well this November, but since I've never used Verizon before, I don't know how good the reception will be, so we'll bring our walkie talkies as well.

Not sure about the walkie talkies. We have never used them, but have been around others who have and they had a rough time with picking up lots of other conversations.
What did we do before cell phones? When we went a month ago - 22 of us - my husband received 65 calls in the first 3 days that we were there from the others in our party who were trying to coordinate when & where to connect for rides, lunch, shopping. Thank God for nationwide plans!
