Walkers Wanna Compare Notes??

I know I haven’t posted much but we’ve been busy. Daughter Miranda got engaged last weekend so it’s been an exciting time. Plans are already forming for the 10/08 wedding.

We have found a new place to train in our town near one of the public pools. There is a trail that the city cleared for walkers/runners/joggers and even dogs. Everyone is very good about picking up their “litter” and the trail is almost 100% in the shade a real blessing. One loop around the pond is 1 mile so we can gauge our time. It’s very different walking on dirt, with up and down hills (not too steep).

So we are working and we love the mix of terrain to work different parts of the legs.

Have a great Monday all. Dave, I have a whole new respect for you. We were in the high 90’s with high humidity over the weekend – no training for me it was like an oven out there. But back to “normal” today so we will start again.

We are so happy for Miranda, she seems like such a fine young lady, I know you are very proud of her.

I have tons of respect for everyone on the WISH Team, lots of people on here with amazing stories. I feel honored to be allowed to be a team member.

Erica and I went for a 5 miler at the park, most of it throught the cemeterys. It was much cooler so very pleasent. Erica did really well, I was worried since she missed doing any training because of the summer cold. She was ready to do more. Tomorrow we are doing 10 miles so that will be a better scale of her condition. She is wearing her Ecco Sandals to train in. They are sandals designed to run in.

Walk strong y'all.

Hello, everyone! Sounds like you're all working away! Good luck to all of you training for the January events!

I bumped up my walking to 4 miles today. I was a little slower than my walk on Saturday, but not much. Tomorrow will be my first day back at water aerobics. I am looking forward to it!

Hi Kathy, 4 miles are good that's the distance I do the most. It's enough to get your heart beating for an hour. But short enough to recover quickly from.

Good Morning Team!!!!

Denise congrats to your daughter, wow exciting!!!!!

I have always wanted to try Le Cellier, but we have never gotten there....maybe one of these trip. For Marathon weekend we are only making it a short trip.....Jan 10 - 14th

Kim

Hey Dave, ask Erica which Ecco sandals she uses. I want to see if I can find some. They sound great.

I made a ADR for Le Cellier for my half marathon trip, since we're less than 180 days out. It's a great place to eat & relax. We go EVERY trip.

What night did you make reservations for at Le Cellier? We were trying to get a few together for a dinner. So far just Erica, Robert, Linda and I.

Erica's Ecco's are Yucatan models. She has also used the Mary Janes for walking distance. The advantage of the sandals is that there is no issue with heat buildup and of course your toes won't be cramped so no toenail problems.

We are heading out for a 10 mile training walk in a bit. Erica made up a training schedule for us. It ends with a 12 mile monday and 24 mile tues 3 weeks before the Goofy, then just shorter walks up to show time.

This next year is going to be so awesome with the ToT then the Disney Goofy and the Flying Pig in May.

Robert has a cool idea of getting together for a 5K and or 10K group training walk while we are at the Park, like a voltsmarch with just WISH team. Kind of a walking visit with each other, through the Parks. We could gather Fast Passes as we go.

I'll post the results of our 10 miler later.

Have an awesome day guys.

morning!

i have some questions for you veteran powerwalkers! i should've posted this yesterday right off the walking workout but i'll try to remember my frustrations!

i just got a Garmin and i think the information is driving me a little crazy!

i know for fitness testing at my fitness center that i need to have my HR 150-160 for good fat burning. yesterday after 30 mins of what sure felt like me concentrating on keeping moving and keeping my pace good and fast, i was still in the 140s. i barely if at all had my HR up to 150 during the entire hour. is there some strategy to get the HR pumping off the get-go. I thought about jogging a little, like .5 mile or so, problem is my lower back and feet (tendonitis) were nagging me a little as it was. i just got new shoes. but i really don't like jogging. i could jog intervals though if this is what it takes -- but 3 years when i lost the weight i did so walking.

but this makes sense b/c i have regained over the past couple years and now have about 12 lbs to 're-lose' could it be from not as effective powerwalking?

so long and short -- how do you get your HR up? i want to be burning burning burning fat

Good morning, everyone!

I went to my water aerobics class this morning! How nice to be back! They're a great bunch people and fun to exercise with.

Steffwalks and I are going to be able to stay an extra four days in WDW after ToT! We're very excited about it! :cloud9: Steff and I will now have time to do the things we most want to do without rushing around so much. That should make us a little less tired for ToT! I don't know how in the world I'm going to keep my eyes open for that late of a start--thank goodness for the 2-hour time difference! That should help!

You all keep up the good work!

Good morning...ooops....afternoon, everyone!

Training is going well so far. I think i'm going to like the John Bingham program. It has fewer long walks than the other program that Nancy and I were using before and I think I will be more likely to follow it closely. yesterday I did 2 miles outside (in the heat) as fast as I could go. My pace was 13:32 which is pretty good because there were a couple of hills involved. This was just for training though; I could never sustain that pace for more than 2 miles. Today I XT'ed with spinning class and then did another 2 miles on the indoor track. It's a 1/16th mile track so I walked 3 laps and jogged 1 for the whole time which gave me a total of 1/2 mile jogging. (for me, that is truly AMAZING!) I would have jogged more but the "girls" are a major burden. I felt like I was running with 2 huge turkeys on my chest.....not a pretty site. :rotfl2:

Dave: I decided to try those sandals that Erica is so fond of. If anyone is interested, I found them at Endless.com. They normally retail for $120 but were listed at $99.90 LESS another $5 if you use overnight shipping! (go figure). I never used Endless, but I think it is related to Amazon.com since they said you could use your Amazon log-in info. I have been having some issues with my feet looking very yucky from all the walking. I'm hoping the open shoe will help them improve.

Nancy: I took care of the Ohanas reservation. Now it's at 7:20 instead of 7:15! The lady said she moved us from a table for 6 to a table for 8 so we can add one other person without calling. Now if Erik decides he wants to cheer you on as well, they'll be room. BTW, are Norm and Brian planning to play a FULL round of golf the morning of the marathon? If so, they just might miss our amazing finish!

Wow, Jeanne you were certainly speedy and you jogged today. I guess I need to get those sneakers with wheels to keep up with you. I did 3 miles outside yesterday in about 43 minutes. I wasn't paying that much attention to the time and walked it outside since it was so nice. I hope to get to pump class tonight for XT and some time on the elipical. However, we have a clogged bathroom sink that will require some attention when I get home. Thanks for changing the Ohana reservation. I think Brian might be leaning toward doing the golf on Sat. I would think that John should be finished with the half by mid morning, and they could go after that. I told him he can't miss our finish.

katwalks--- How nice that you and Steffwalks can stay for a few extra days after ToT.

ohMom--- Welcome to having to lose a few pounds club.

Denise--- Congratulations to your DD on her engagement.

Nancy

Nancy

Nancy, you're a genius......maybe we can both get them and take turns pulling one another during the marathon. It would be like doing only half the work. :rotfl:

Jeanneg,

I really love my ecco Yucatan sandals and Extreme Mary Janes for all my walking. I have found that there is no breaking in needed for these shoes. The arches give support without being overpowering so that just about everybody can wear them.

As for keeping your feet from getting too yucky, the only thing I can suggest is a spa pedicure. Most nail salons offer this service. I get my feet pampered about every couple of weeks.

Erica

Erica forgot to mention her resident Cabana Boy gives her a great long foot massage several times a week. She was actually getting one as she wrote her note.

OhMom, welcome. It sounds like your heart rate is plenty high for training effect and fat burning. Unless you are under 30 then 140 is right at your target level for maximum effect.

I train at 65% to 75% of max HR and race at about 85% to 90%.

We ended up with 6.5 miles for today. The temp was already high 80s at 8 am this morning so the heat changed our plans. So far this week we have 5 miles on Monday and 6.5 on tuesday. I'm planning my regular 4 miler at 7 am in the morning and Erica will try to get her 4 in later in the day.

Have a great evening guy's.

Dave:hippie:

Oh I have Garmin envy, but I can't see paying the price for them.....:confused3

Got my 5K in last night, it was a bit tough for some reason, we are dealing with heat and humidity again but that wasn't it. Anyways got a 7K for tonight.

How is everyone doing???? I really haven't kept up with the posts this week...my bad:confused:

Hope you are all having a great week.....long weekend coming up here....can't wait!!!!!

Kim

Hi Erica, great to hear from you. My shoes are scheduled to arrive today so I'll let you know the verdict. The powder blue were so pretty but I couldn't resist the apple green......it is so close to the WISH color! :rotfl2: I'm so jealous.....I want a cabana boy too! Re your advice on the pedicure: I actually was getting them regularly and my feet didn't look too bad. Then my toenails started turning funny shades and I got too embarrassed to have anyone see them. Now that my long walks are not so long, they seem to be getting better. Wearing the new sandals during my training will be an incentive to keep my feet moving so quickly no one can see them! :rotfl:

Nancy: I was comparing JB's program to the WB one we followed for the half-marathon. He never requires more than 60 minutes mid-week, which is about 4 miles for us. I just made myself a little training journal and I tweaked his plan just a bit to have a 22-mile walk at the top of training. I changed the 9 to 10, the 10 to 12 and so on until I reach 22. WB's program had so much mid-week mileage that it was really taking alot of time. I'm really psyched about this program because it fits my schedule so much better and means I'm that much more likely to stick with it. We were certainly well-trained for the half, but I was hurting all the time. I think this will be so much better.

I was just looking through all my daughter's stuff from the '07 marathon (including her beautiful medal which she also left behind) The party at PI is free for all participants, but 1/2 price for other guests. I'm trying to figure out the best multiple spots to cheer on my hubby and daughter during the Donald since they are going to competing at 2 very different paces.

Good morning, everyone! A rest day for me, so I am getting some chores done here at home.

Jeanne! Wow! You're the woman! Keep up the good work!

Kim - I just got my first Garmin about a month ago. I ordered it throught Amazon.com and saved about $100 over the one I saw in a running store. You might check it out.....

Ohmom - I'm no expert, but I think 150 - 160 might be a little high for endurance training. Sounds to me like WWDave's right about keeping it in the 140's.

Denise - congratulations on your daughter's engagement!

Dave - you wouldn't want to come to Colorado and do those foot massages, would you? They sound wonderful!!!

You all keep up the good work! Make a great day!

Kathy

hey thanks all -- i guess i thought for my regular weekly walks that i should have it higher, do we consider those walks endurance?

i did get a great 8.25 miler in today -- except for the tiniest blister i have ever seen on the top of my big toe

another Pengiun fan here :teeth:

Erica loans me out to her friends for foot massages when we do the Flying Pig.

We have to wear suits now at work. Today was the first day. I'm not a fan of ties at all. Something about my head in a noose.

Dave:hippie:

Good morning team!!!!

7K done last night, our humidity has gone crazy!!!!!! I hope the temps come down quite a bit before my 1/2....next month.

Hope you are all doing well, will check out Amazon for the garmin...thanks for the tip.
