Hi. I know I've read in the past that a lot of Wisher's use the Walk away the pounds dvd's. I just ordered one the other day and I had a few questions before I get it. I ordered the 5 mile walk. I've been walking on a walking path here and in general I do a 4 mile walk. And it takes me about 60-61 mins. about 15 min miles. I'm hoping to use this dvd to train indoors with the weather now getting colder. Does walking indoors compare with outdoors in any way? And has anyone ever used these to help train for a race? I'm doing the WDW 1/2 marathon in January. So I thought I could just use the dvd twice in a row to get a longer distance. Plus I would like to increase my walking speed.

Any feedback or advice would be great. I'm really hoping to see some weight loss with this as well. I've been really stalled for a year now. Thanks!

I have one of the Walk away the pounds videos, and I LOVE it!!! Mine has a 1 mile walk, 2 mile walk, and 3 mile. I do the 3 mile the most because it is 45 minutes and I work up a SWEAT!!! It is nice too because she incorporates weights into the workout that really make a difference. I have noticed my arms are in better shape, and I can actually see muscle!:thumbsup2 I am thinking of ordering some even harder ones so that I can be more challenged. You will love them!!!!

Thanks! I got an advanced dvd (5 Mile) and I hope it is not too advanced!! But I'm glad to hear you love it. I hope it comes tomorrow!

There is nothing to compare to the "real" thing. I amnot certain if this 5 miler will keep you on pace for the half, but I figure if you are energized enough doing it this should certainly count for something.

Is this the only work out when the weather drives you indoors or will you have other options as well?

Hi Tiger Lily, I do have an elliptical and I use that alot and I think it helps with training for hills. But for some reason even at lowest resistance I can not do the same distance/time as when I'm outside walking. And I know that I'm going a lot faster than when I'm walking outside. When I do walk outside I have a DD almost 3 that I have to push in a stroller with me. So it's not that I'm just being wimpy when I don't want to go outside! LOL! I have to consider if it's too cold or windy for her as well.

I haven't received the DVD yet. I guess after I do it I'll know better. But hopefully by having that to do indoors I'll have no excuse for missing a workout!

I have the 5 mile advance and I plan to do it before we head off to Thanksgiving at my parents house.

It is broken up into 5 - 1 mile segments, that play continuously. There is 1 mile each with hand weights, walk belt or stretchie band. Then there is 1 mile of high intenstity walking and 1 mile of interval of light jogging/walking. You DO NOT have to use the boosters or do the jogging.

As for comparing it to an outdoor walk, well they do give you a good workout but even though she calls is it inhome walking it is more light aerobics.

Thanks Christa for the breakdown on the program. I received it today in the mail. So I'll probably give it a try this weekend. I'm a little disappointed that it is more like light aerobics. Oh well. I just have to keep doing something everyday to keep on track. And it is freezing here all ready. I so was not ready for winter to come!

Thanks again!

I say light aerobics not that in the way that it is an easy workout but that is aerobics light. There are 5 basic moves (though she says there is 4). There is marching in place, side steps, knee lifts, kicks and kickbacks. She will also do walking up for 2 steps and back two steps and do knee lights & side steps (and in some workouts kick backs, though I don't think in this one) moving up and back four. It is not your standard aerobics workout.

It is going to be hard to a good "real" walking indoors. But if you life near an indoor mall you could try going early and do "laps." I wish I lived near a mall for this reason alone.

I have to agree with Lily - you can't really use it for your Half training. I used my WATP tapes for my cross training days when I was training for my Half but as you will see you won't be 'walking' the same way as you do outdoors. Don't get me wrong - I love the WATP stuff but it isn't the same as getting outside.

It could be freezing for the marathon so you could use your long day training for a way to experiment with what you are going to wear. I was surprised at what ended up being the best solution for me.

Good luck! :goodvibes

Thanks Christa and Terry! I did the Dvd yesterday. I can totally see what you mean. It is more aerobic like than walking outside. But it was good. I didn't sweat as much as I do when walking or anywhere near as much as on the elliptical.

I do have a mall nearby. That is a good suggestion for walking it. I just hate all the little kiosk people who constantly stop you and try to sell you everything.

And I do need to think about what I'm wearing for the half. I'll just have to keep pushing it outside. But at least now I have another way to change it up indoors too.

I guess I'm going to have to plan Saturday afternoons for longer walks outdoors by myself. At least then my DH is around and I could go alone. Not my favorite choice but I'm going to have to do it.

Thanks again everyone for the help!

For the mall it is best to go early before the stores open, that way it is less/uncrowed and no annoying kiosk people ;)

I love the idea of using the dvd as cross-training. I think that the elliptical is a great way to get in some quality time too. If you get most of your w/o using these then the weekend on your own sounds like you can manage that. I think you'll be good, just keep pushing yourself if you are working indoors so you don't lose the pacing you need.

Another thing to consider is taking your long walk on the weekend in the morning. I made my "wogs" earlier and earlier as I got closer to the Half weekend until I was starting at 6 am. I know it's colder but that is the closer to the actual conditions of the Half. I figured the more things I made 'routine', that would be one less thing to worry about on the big day.

Walking before the stores open is great at the mall. No sales people to bother you and no one blocking you when you are trying to maintain your pace.

Good luck! You can do it! :goodvibes

Thanks guys!!!! I'll have to find out what time my mall opens to see if i could walk there on occasion.

I did a combined total of 20 miles(approx) last week. So I was pretty happy with that. It was of course a combo of outside and elliptical and one time of the dvd. I'll definitely have to do the early morning times on the weekends. That is a great idea for being on track with the actual race conditions.

I appreciate all the advice. I wish my elliptical mileage worked out the same way as a treadmill. I can't really go get one right now and my elliptical is brand new. So I'm trying to just focus on my perceived exertion and the time while I'm on it. Hope it doesn't fail me!

Tomorrow's supposed to be a little warmer and no rain (I hope) so back to the trail!

Thanks again everyone!

Don't worry too much about the treadmill (or lack thereof). I have one and it isn't the same as actually being outside or forcing yourself to set the pace versus a machine.

Are you following a training schedule? That will help you get a feel for where you should be and how many miles you need to be getting in each week. I used Hal's plan... http://www.halhigdon.com/halfmarathon/novice.htm

Thank you for the link. I have been loosely following a plan. My sister is training for the Goofy and I've been doing a smaller version of her plan. I think she is following Hal's too. I think I'm pretty on track with him so far. It's just this week that the long runs are getting long. Supposed to do 7 miles this week! EEEK! I'm gonna do it, I'm gonna do it, I'm gonna do it!!

Thanks!
