I am planning on making a Waldorf Salad to bring for our Thanksgiving dinner. I never had before and I know there are many variations. What are your favorite kinds? We recently had one that I think was mayo based, w/walnuts, raisins (sp?), and cheddar cheese pieces. It seemed pretty good. Thanks for any help or recipes.

I'll have to see if I can find a copy of Mom's recipe; we just had her Waldorf Salad at a mid-October family gathering. It had mayo, apples, walnuts, and celery (no cheese). I really like this salad - I think it would be a nice addition to a Thanksgiving dinner.

8 delicious apples, diced (peeled or unpeeled, your choice - we did not peel)
8 celery stalks, diced
1 pound walnuts, chopped
3/4 cup sugar
1 pint Miracle Whip
1/4 cup Crisco oil

In a large bowl, mix apples and celery. Add chopped nuts. Mix last three ingredients together and pour over apple mixture. Mix well, chill and serve.

This is my recipe, but I use Hellman's Mayonnaise and no oil.. Made it once for the end-of-the-season party at the lake about 14 years ago and haven't been able to get out of making it since..:headache:

It really is good though! :rotfl:

I don't know if this is technically Waldorf Salad, but that's what my mom calls hers. It doesn't have mayo and is more of a jello salad, but it's still good.

Cinnamon Candy Apple Salad

INGREDIENTS (Nutrition)

* 1 cup boiling water
* 1 (3 ounce) package cherry flavored gelatin
* 1/3 cup cinnamon red hot candies
* 3/4 cup cold water
* 1/2 cup tart apples, diced
* 1/2 cup celery, chopped
* 1/2 cup walnuts, chopped

DIRECTIONS

1. In a medium bowl, add boiling water to the cherry gelatin and stir to dissolve. Carefully add the cinnamon candies. Let them sit for a minute, then stir to dissolve the candies into the gelatin mixture. Once they are fully dissolved, add the cold water. Allow the mixture to sit for ten minutes to come to room temperature.
2. At room temperature, mix in the apples, celery, and walnuts. Pour gelatin mixture into a decorative mold or serving bowl and refrigerate overnight to set.

We make my English grandmother's recipe --- it's kind of a sweet/sour dressing.

Apples -- cut in cubes
Grapes -- cut in half
Walnut pieces

Dressing:

1/4 tsp. mustard
1 Tbsp. flour
1 egg
1/3 cup sugar

Mix dressing ingredients together. Add 1/4 cup vinegar and 1/4 cup water. Stir well. Cook over low/medium heat until thick. Cool and pour over fruit and nuts.

What makes it a waldorf salad is the mayo. I really don't think that is a waldorf salad.

The original recipe contained apples, celery and mayo. I like adding grapes and mixing in a little cool whip with the mayo.

If I recall correctly, I think my mom's had some crushed pineapple in it. She also mixed some of the juice from the pineapple with the mayo for the "dressing". She used apples, raisins, nuts and celery in hers.
