Wal-Mart super centers CANNOT be open tomorrow here in MA

The Family argument - I have a spouse who works at a hospital. He works every other holiday, as do all medical employees. So, should only families without medical professions get a day together? It's easy to think about it as a day for family when you don't spend every other holiday without a key member of your family.

How can the government tell a story that they *can't* be open?
HA! Come to Bergen County, NJ.
Most retail stores cannot be open on Sundays. No Target, no malls, most retail stores..
What is open?
Grocery stores, drug stores, hardware stores, Barnes and Noble.
Costco..but everything but the food is roped off and you cannot buy it.
Also craft stores, liquor stores and restaurants are open.
In Paramus, which is a town in Bergen County, not only are all the malls closed, (and the drug stores etc are not open there)but if you go to the grocery store they have all the brooms, sponges etc roped off-you are not allowed to buy it on Sundays.
My husband used to work there and he was not allowed to even go into his office to pick up paperwork on a Sunday.
They laso had signs up at the mall that due to the blue laws they would not be opening at 6 on Black Friday, but at 7.
They are strict in the county, but crazy strict in Paramus.

If I need something I have to drive 25 minutes to the nearest mall that is out of the county..now I know that doesn;t sound like alot to most people, but I am used to have everything 5 minutes from my home, I don;t want to have to get on an interstate and drive that far to shop!

We too are from the Puritan state of Mass. I tried explaining to my girls 9 and 11 about blue laws and their roots. I was very glad for your post. It made the task so much easier. All I can say is store openings on Thanksgiving is just so Massachusetts. Too Liberal, perhaps. I guess that it is one's own interpretation. I think It is just plain wrong. I grew up here in MA and don't recall any particular hardship from a store closing on Sunday. Thank you so much for your topic and insight.
With that I guess, in MA terms, I am off to buy my "holiday" tree.

I would never agree with denying a store the right to be open on Thanksgiving. It would be nice though if that right could somehow be balanced with the right of employees to be off on that day. Whether it's an arbitrary day or not, it is very important to many people and I respect the value they place on it.

I work at a theatre and I hate that we have to work every holiday. We aren't even allowed to request off the holidays anymore. I had to be sneaky and change my availability to ONE DAY a week just so I could get the holidays off -- will change it back after Christmas.

I think that stores SHOULD be allowed to be open, but I also think that workers should have the right to have the day off without being forcee to come in. If management wants the theatre open that bad they can get their ***es out of bed and work all day!!!!

I see that this was first posted the day before Thanksgiving, which is why the store couldn't be open. Here I thought that it was posted today (Dec 3rd) and the stores were closing tomorrow, in honor of my birthday. :rotfl2: I mean, that really isn't necessary--Wal-Mart could just buy me a gift and mail it and I would consider that honor enough. :rotfl:
