wake up calls?

Might seem like a weird question, but I'm a non-traveller! The last time I stayed in a hotel I was 11 so I wasn't thinking about things like this... is it usual for hotels to have alarm clocks you can set in the room, or do you need to ask the front desk to give you a wake up call in the morning? For reference I'm going to be staying at the Tropicana.

Every hotel I have stayed in has had alarm clocks.

And if you have a cell phone it usually has an alarm feature too.

Most hotels have alarm clocks in the rooms, but some expect you'll just use your cell phone these days (or that's what I was told when we asked in a down town SF hotel) or get a wake up call. Be careful though, I've had my wake up calls overlooked twice in the past. Neither was a big deal, but it is something to consider and, perhaps, have back up.

The reason I asked is because we won't have cell phones, we're coming from Canada so there will be roaming charges if we use them, and we probably wouldn't want to use them anyways, we're on vacation! So if there's no point in bringing them to use just as alarm clocks, they're definitely getting left at home.

I think I might just have to contact my hotel and ask them!

I am on a hotel room more than I am in my own bed. Wake up calls are standard operating procedure for any hotel. Some have automated systems, some you call the front desk. Any decent hotel should also have an alarm clock, plus I have my cell phone alarm. I have learned the hard way to never trust just one of those if I NEED to be up. I ALWAYS set two...typically a wake up call and my cell phone alarm. I have had alarm clock not go off and wake up calls missed.

There shouldn't be a roaming charge for using the alarm clock on your phone. Roaming happens when making phone calls/texting, anything that use cell towers. The alarm clock is part of the phone.

If there is an alarm clock in the room I'm definitely going to test it a couple times, we're arriving on the Sunday about midday but not going into the parks until Monday, so I'll set a couple "five minute alarms" to make sure it's working properly. As long as it goes off I'll be up, I'm a pretty light sleeper.

I realize that, but what I mean is using the alarm clock is the only reason I would bring my phone, and if the hotel room has an alarm clock, phone stays home!

You should be fine with the alarm clock at the room make sure you set it up right and good to go. But I would bring one cell phone always just in case I have and emergency, in case of an emergency doesn't matter how much the roaming are. When we travel we keep one cell phone with us all the time in airplane mode (so I don't get any charges for missed calls or anything) just my 2 cents .

Another thing to remember with hotel alarm clocks is to check them even if you aren't going to use them. I can't tell you how many times we've been in a hotel sound asleep for that darn alarm clock to go off super early in the morning.

Personally, we do both wake up calls and use our cell phone. Just in case we want to snooze a bit longer
