Waitlisting to replace part of an existing reservation

We are going on our first DVC trip in October. I have one reservation with 4 nights in a studio. I would like to waitlist and replace two of those nights with a 1 bedroom at a different resort. We are using borrowed points as the contract was empty when we purchased. When attempting to setup a waitlist for those 2 nights, I get the option to replace a reservation with the waitlist reservation. Will that cancel our entire reservation for 4 nights if the waitlist comes through or will it only replace the two nights we are attempting to change?

If we had points in our account, I think this generally wouldn't be an issue as we could simply modify the original reservation if the waitlist came through. As it stands, I would end up borrowing those points from next year if I did that and have to waste around 50 points as we will not be traveling again until after our February use year.

If your 4 nights are currently booked as one reservation, then your waitlist for 2 nights coming through would replace all 4 nights.

You need to book the 4 nights as separate 2 night reservations. Then select the option for waitlist to replace the 2 nights you’d like to switch to a 1 bedroom. (This is for future reference. I’m not sure I would try dropping two nights and picking them up again at this time for an October stay. It’s slim pickings out there if something goes sideways.)

Waitlists are all or nothing when you set them up. You can call MS to set it up instead and they do have a way of putting a note on it that you only want to replace two of the four nights in your current reservation.

Thanks for the info guys!

It is sounding too risky to mess with it. I don't want to trust my vacation to a note in the system when things are this booked up. We will just stick with the studio rather than risking any issues this time.

We closed on our contract in June and booked for October on borrowed points. Next trip (thinking October 2023) we will have more time to plan and book and not be running on borrowed points.

And, for future, if you think you might want to try for a split stay, book it that way from the start.

This way, you can change part of it or waitlist part if it in your own.

If it never comes through, you can have MS combine those back closer to the trip into one.

We do that all the time.
