I see a lot of waitlist vs stalking posts on here. I am a little confused, so maybe someone can educate me. Why is it a question of which to do? Shouldn't you waitlist since I assume they get priority if a room comes available?

In a perfect system, you would be correct. However, in practice, released reservations don't always immediately go back into the system and people have had success snapping up reservations they find on the RAT, beating out their own waitlist.

Most do both. Sometimes waitlist works first. Sometimes stalking works first.

It's also worth noting that if you have a waitlist for 4 days, and 3 days come available, the waitlist will not take those days. Waitlist must match exact.

So if you snap up those 3 days and adjust your waitlist to a single day, while you reset your priority, you are always more likely to get a waitlist for 1 day than 4.

I just did this my very first time booking a DVC trip. I had the waitlist and randomly checked each day. One day, the room I wanted was available.... I rubbed my eyes and checked to make sure I had entered the correct dates in. To my surprise, I got my reservation before the waitlist caught it.

It covers a variety of scenarios - several mentioned above. But owners are limited to 2 waitlists in their UY. If you are open to more locations you need to "stalk" and try and pick them up yourself. So even when I set up waitlists I will still "stalk" in case something else opens up that we also are willing to book.
