Waitlist holding points questions

Hi, I searched several threads but want to make sure I understand this correctly as I try to not screw anything up. I currently have a waitlist for one night, October 13, to replace a reservation for the same night (would like to move from a 2 bedroom to a GV). If it doesn't come through, we will still go and just stay in the 2 bedroom. My use year is February, so I have to bank any unused 2016 points by 9/30. To make it extra interesting, the current reservation that would be replaced is a mix of current year and borrowed points. So, without putting us in danger of losing points and knowing that the waitlist amount is a higher value of points than the current reservation, would I be able to:

1) Assume that if the waitlist comes through, MS will use the points from the reservation I've noted as being replaced in the request so that I don't end up with borrowed points not being used (looking for a direct transfer from the existing reservation to the new)?

2) Leave the waitlist open until 9/30 (the drop dead date for banking our 2016 points) without fear of points going into holding due to being within 30 days of the reservation if the waitlist is filled (not going to cancel current reservation if it doesn't go through)?

3) Similar to 2), if I leave the waitlist open until 7 days before the reservation (10/6), and it fills at that point, would they be likely to use 2016 banked points to fill it, or would that be a borrow from 2017 transaction?

I'm going to ask the questions with the assumption that MS will fulfill the waitlist correctly per the rules, and that if they don't I'd be able to call and get it fixed after the fact. I know that's not 100%, but that's about as many variables as my brain can handle. :faint:

Thanks!

If the waitlist fills AFTER you have already banked all your current year points, MS would have to borrow points to fill it. I believe you have to give them permission when you set up the waitlist for the borrowing to occur.

1. Yes, that's what should happen if you set it up to replace the reservation. If they make a mistake they will fix it if you let them know.
2. If you want it, this is what I'd do whether you decide to bank or not.
3. No, they'd borrow the new 2017 points leaving the 2016 banked points in the 2017 UY. But still better than having holding account points because you'll have far more time and opportunities to use or rent them if needed. This is what I'd do, when you get close, go ahead and bank them and risk borrowing 2017 points and not using the additional 2016 points. Better than having points you can't bank IMO. Just check that you did set up the WL to replace the current reservation and to allow borrowing. If so, to get the 3 BR, the best option is to let it ride, bank all points close to the banking deadline and pray.
