Waitlist basics question

Let me know if this is a good way to go or if there is a better way.
We are planning a December trip. Our home resort is GF. at this point we will have to wait list for the week we want to go.
We plan on waitlisting this stay. When the 7 month window opens up I thought we would make reservations at an open resort for the week in question.
Would this remove our wait list?
If our waitlist comes through would Disney automatically cancel our other reservations?
Is there a better way to do this?

No. It will remain until it either comes through, expires or you cancel it.

If our waitlist comes through would Disney automatically cancel our other reservations?

No. A waitlist must be initially set up to cancel an existing reservation and your 7 month reservation didn't exist at that time.

Is there a better way to do this?

Not really. If you cancel the GF waitllst and set it up again to cancel the 7 month reservation, you go to the bottom of the GF waitlists. My advice is to keep checking for GF availability and book what you can. I'd still do the back up if I could. Good luck

I think it might be possible to contact MS after the back up reservation is made and have them to place a note on the wait list that you wish to cancel the back up if the wait list comes thru. You would have to do this after the back up reservation is made at 7 months.

ETA: Don’t wait to set up that wait list. Do it as soon as wait listing is possible for your dates so that you are near the top of the list.
