Waaaaah! Just got a Jury Summons!

you don't get reimbursed by your employer and they actually expect you to serve.

sorry I see that as a BIG hardship on your family.

if it is not to late - be sure to include that in your letter.

I do hope you are kidding. Anyone who can own a luxury like DVC can afford to serve on a jury. Attitudes like that are what is wrong in this country. Too many folks think they are OWED something when it is the other way around. Heaven forbid you take a few days out of your life every 10 years or so to serve.

That being said, I can understand the trepidation one feels when things are not in their control. Flyerfan, I hope your service and vacation go smoothly! (Although I am no flyer fan, Bergeron looks to be out the rest of the year.)

lol, sorry but I wouldnt claim to know everyones financial status just because they own dvc. heaven forbid someone has to serve for weeks with no pay

Where we live, we can get Jury summons from the City, County, and then from the Federal level, once every year. Believe it or not, we got the luck of the draw two years ago. Had it all hit in one quarter two years in a row. I believe in serving my duty, but I was afraid to go to the mailbox.

When my son, that was in college received one in the fall 06, I explained that he was in college, they scheduled it for when he got out in May 07.

We were afraid to schedule a vacation, I thought that was a unexcused reason. I sure hope this works out for you.

Last time this happened to me I threw it out. Since it was sent regular mail there is no way they could prove that you actually received it. A few months later I got a letter certified mail that I would be in contempt if I didn't show up this time. At least this way they couldn't turn down my request for a postponement.

As far as people shouldn't complain...If the system wasn't such a farce, wasting people's time sitting around doing nothing only to be sent home. I wouldn't mind if the time was actually productive. Don't give me that garbage about the "threat of the jury" being important in making people settle. They could do the same thing while people sat home and waited to be called in IF a trial was needed.

Financial hardships can hppen to all types of people. I can buy the most luxurious things but still live paycheck to paycheck because of the amount I spend or have spent. I know we couldn't survive my wife being called for Jury duty for any length of time as she is self employed and can only work during the school calendar.

I am a teacher. It is a educational hardship for my students to be without my presence in the classroom for an extended period of time. Why should 120 kids be subjected to a substitute for 1 or more weeks so I can sit around and read a book?

How about the surgeon who has to cancel life saving operations. I know I would not have been happy if my wife's surgeon told her we had to wait an extra week to remove her cancerous ovary because he was selected for jury duty that week!

Devise a plan so a person can pick a week instead of it being set in stone.

I have received 3 over the past 10 years. Each time on the questionaire I mark that serving would pose a financial hardship on our family, send it back, and I never hear from them again.

Noithing to do with DVC so I won't say more than this short opinion....The reason our juries are full of ( as pc as I can get) less than perfect jurers is because fine folks like us find a way out of it. back oon subject op should have no trouble getting a new date.

I don't mean to complain, it's just bad timing. Any other time, I would have no problem (even though they only pay $9/day and I don't get reimbursed by my employer). I mailed my summons back this morning with a note. We'll see what happens from there.

From your signature "flyerfan" you should be used to disapointments, especially if your also an Eagles +/or Phillies fan... Sorry couldn't resist:lmao: don't flame me to bad I'm also a frustrated Phila fan..:sad2: I'll be up your way on Tue.

I agree totally with this! Why can't they have a better plan. It would be nice to pick a week. And better pay! I mean, c'mon $9/day!?!? That's a small fraction of my pay. DH has no problem serving because his employer reimburses him the difference.

every 10 years - are you kidding - was called twice in 2 years - once in the next year - 3 times in the next year. got sick and they release me and haven't called me back yet.

I want to live where you are - once in 10 years I can handle.

there are too many lawsuites and too many jury calls. Once they get you to start coming - takes almost a lawsuit to stop them.

mother was still being called when she was 80. Her doctor had to write and tell them that in his opinion a 80 year old should not serve. (mother couldn't drive to well and now she can't drive at all).

mother served starting in 1970 to 2002 - and she got called just about every year - sometimes twice a year.

Here in Montgomery County, Maryland we have a "one day, one trial" system for jury duty meaning if you're called to serve you call in after 5 PM the day before to see if your number is needed. If it isn't, you're exempt for approximately 3 years otherwise you have to report and it's either sit in the jury lounge till you're needed for that day or chosen...so basically, if you go once you're not chosen you can go...and you've served....Most employers around here pay you your regular wage because what the court pays is basically expense money and it's against the law here for employers to deduct it from your pay.

I live in Sonoma County, CA and that's pretty much the same system we have here. But several years ago I used to live in Yolo County, CA and they had the MOST inconvienient system ever:

1) At the start of the year, they would select residents to be part of their jury "pool" for they year. They didn't tell you that you had been selected, but you found out pretty quick when you were called up for service.

2) They called in prospective jurors for specific trials, and would wait until the trial dates were pretty much set in stone, so you were only given 7 - 10 days notice.

3) They didn't even bother with having jurors fill out a questionaire, or ask if anyone had any conflicts- they went straight into picking individual jurors and having them be questioned by the lawyers. So you had to sit through the entire jury selection process, unless you were lucky enough to be one of the first people called AND ended up getting excused.

4) During your year of service, you either had to: 1) Sit on a jury OR 2) Go to THREE jury selections. And you were still eligible to be picked for the following year's jury pool, and have to do it all again. The first time I was in the pool, I did have to show up to three jury selections (fortunately one of them they decided to plea bargain at the last minute, so that was a short day). The second time I was in the pool, I was fortunate enough to be moving out of the county within a few weeks, and so didn't have to attend.

It was the same thing in Philly. I served multiple times and it was always one day; never even got to jury selection.

I just served here in DE on Nov. 14 with a vacation to WDW on the 18th!!!! I called when I got the notice and they would not accept a pending vacation as an excuse or postponment. However they told me most trials only last a day or two and if it ran longer I would be excused because of my vacation.

So I went and mostly sat in a big waiting room. However I was called into a group for a potential jury but I was not picked. ( I was relieved)! Even if I had been picked it was only an afternoon trial.

It was stressful going to do it knowing I had so much to still do for our vacation, but I was really glad I did my civic duty and now coming back after vacation I'm glad I don't have that hanging over my head.

BTW, in DE you do not receive any compensation for your first day of jury duty only if you are selected and put on a case do you receive any money. I got my parking validated and that's it!

My mom got called in NC a few weeks ago for the week we're at SSR. She was given a week and a half to choose from. She called and left a message and they called back offering to postpone her a few months. Then she started asking about questions and due to a medical condition she was permanently removed from the pool.

I was called several years ago and asked for a relocation due to childcare issues. They granted the change and I ended up being the foreperson for the day long trial. I was chosen as the foreperson due to the fact I was a teacher at the time. The judge told us that if we're ever in his courtroom a gain to let him know we've been there before and he'd let us go.

I was called while I was in college in the area I attended school over an hour from where I lived. I spent 4 hours reading and watching tv.

I got called shortly before I was married and since I was changing counties I was exempt from serving in the county.
