With timers on the washer and dryer, how long should you wait to take someone else's clothes out if they are not there to do it?

Would it be proper to just put there things in a chair while you do your wash since they weren't there and its cutting into your time on your vacation?

Well, since unless you are there when the washer dryer stops you probably have no way of knowing if the clothes have been there for two hours or two minutes, so if you're going to take them out you run the risk of having the owner of the clothing walking into the laundry room while you're in the middle of handling their clothes.

I would pick a strategic time like early morning, dinner time on a night that you might just be having something in your room, or later in the evening to do laundry before I would take someone's clothes out. Is it rude for them to leave them...well, if they leave the clothes there for an hour after it's done yes, but I still wouldn't handle someone else's belongings, I'd just come back later and not let it ruin my vacation.

But that's just how I'd handle it. I'm sure others might handle it differently.

When you encounter the clothes left in the dryer by the guest who is severely delayed in returning, it only takes about a minute for you to gently take them out of the dryer, put them neatly in a clothes basket, and then toss them in the nearest dumpster.

If you aren't in the laundry room when the dryer goes off, see if the dryer is still hot/warm. If isn't not hot/warm, I would take the stuff out and put them in a basket, chair, or whatever. If they're still hot/warm I would wait 10-15 min to see if the owner shows up and if they don't I would take them out then. Anyone who does laundry on a regular basis should know about how long a load takes and should be checking on things periodically.

This happened to me on my trip last summer. I waited 20 minutes (DH & DS were still sleeping) for the person to get their clothes out of the dryer. I finally took them out, put mine in and my clothes were dry before they even returned!!! IMHO it's rude for someone to be gone that long. Annmarie

The nice thing about Old Key West is the w/d are by the pool so you can plan a swim while doing laundry. No need to give up the fun.

Perhaps posting signs telling people how long a washer cycle is and a dryer cycle is for those particular machines could allow people to bettter judge their laundry time and avoid the problem of occupied but not moving machines.

How long does a washer cycle take anyway?

A dryer cycle?

In college I'd leave my laundry for hours on a regular basis. On a good day I'd return to find it out of the dryer and neatly folded for me. :p

The original post I started (stated) that the washers and dryers do
have timers on them . Therefore one would know (within 10 min) when there clothes would be done. Knowing this I would think it rude for the offender not to be there to take their clothes out and not rude for the next person to take them out . JMO

have a happy day! Paul:smooth:

The BCV ones didn't have accurate timers. I still think signs with times would be a good idea, and extremely easy to do.

This happened to me at BCV last trip. The clothes had been waiting in the dryer since I started my wash. I placed their clothes into a rolling basket and placed mine in the dryer. They didin't return until I was leaving the laudry room after my clothes were dry. I'm sure they didn't want to take time out of their vacation to run back there, well I didn't want to take time out of mine to wait for them either. This was at 10 o'clock at night.

I agree that it's rude to take up the washer/dryer space for hours on end. Still, I don't think your time on vacation is so valuable that you can't just come back another time, because it's rude to handle another person's clothes, too. Certainly, there are exceptions--say, when your child threw up, you need to wash those clothes NOW. But, if there wasn't some compelling reason for washing your clothes now, I would just come back another time.

I agree with TIdoublegaER. If the clothes are cooled down I think they are "fair game" to be removed. I don't particularly like to handle someone else's (clean and dry) undies, but I have done it so I could finish.

My time is valuable, even on vacation. When I stay in a studio or at a regular resort I set aside a specific time to do my laundry. I don't want to come back another time because someone else didn't set aside enough of their time for a complete job. I also don't want to do laundry at odd times so I will always have a free washer and dryer.

While I generally stay thoughout most of the wash cycle, only leaving for a few minutes if that, I would strongly caution someone against handling other people's clothes, you may find yourself pushing a confrontational situation that is a bit more than you bargained for. That's not what anyone really wants during a vacation, is it? Sounds like a bad idea.

It seems to me that if I don't want other people handling my laundry, I should either make sure to come back just before the washer/dryer finishes or stay nearby where I can check on it frequently. It's unrealistic to expect others who want to use the machines to leave my stuff in them once the cycle is done. The machines are there for everyone, not just me!

I'm not one to leave my laundry in the machines. Frankly we opt for the larger villa to have our own in-room facilities, so I don't see this applying to us. However, I still think caution is in order before handling other's laundry. Going over the line of assertiveness to aggressiveness may backfire big time. 'Nuff said.

I'm not into touching anyone elses laundry either BUT if I'm on vacation and I have the time to wash/dry my clothes, then I want to do it on my schedule, not someone elses. If I were to find clothes sitting there, cold, it would upset me. I'd probably look around to see if someone was coming. If not, I'd remove them and put my clothes in. I would not be comfortable doing it, but I would. Maybe the next time, the original person will have a little more consideration for all involved.

By the way, drusba, I love your suggestion!!;)
