VWL, the "winter resort"

I have heard VWL described as the winter resort at WDW.

Anyone want to elaborate?

We will be there in a 2BR in January.

Hmmm.... Just a guess, but the Lodge atmosphere can be more closely related to cold weather. VWL/WL are themed on the National Parks of the NorthWest, where they do experience winter.
The Wilderness Lodge also closely resembles the Old Faithful Inn in Yellowstone, where winter can be brutal.
Then of course there is the whole ski lodge stereotype.

On a side note, the Christmas decorations in VWL/WL are, in my opinion, the best of any resort. Perhaps it is the theme of the Lodge and villas that lends itself to the decorations, again tying into the "winter resort" thing.

There is one other thing about the WL and that is the pool. If you have a shot of swimming without freezing when you are out of the pool during the winter it is at the WL pool that is somewhat protected from the elements by the lodge itself.

We changed our plans to stay at VWL instead of BWV for Thanksgiving thru the middle of the following week. Just love the holiday feel there. The huge fireplaces, the theming all lends itself to a cozy mid-winter hideaway in the mountains.

I own at VWL and have never heard it referred to as the Winter Resort. Where did you hear this?

By the way, the Old Faithful Inn is celebrating 100 years of existance this summer. Some people had reservations as long ago as 20 years ago.

Maybe got that name from the blasssting of the air conditioning in the hallways!!!!! Sure is freezing...........especially after coming out of the pool!! LOL!!

I am staying at a cabin near Old Faithful this fall, got the reservation a couple of weeks ago. I tried to get the Inn but it was booked up. The cabins are near the Inn from what I understand. At WL they have a fountain that is more faithful then old faithful. LOL

We stayed at WL last November and the "geyser" didn't go off a single time during our 5-day visit. Was it something we ate?

This is pretty much my first reaction to this post as well.

We've only been to VWL in the summer, so for us it is definitely not a winter resort!

I would guess that the phrase came from someone who feels that the decor and theming are better for the winter months.

Some people feel that the decor is too dark and woodsy, and I guess feel that the lighter colors of the other DVC resorts are more appealing in the summer?

The phrase "winter resort" just kind of strikes me oddly. But I guess everyone has their own thoughts on how to describe a resort.

I don't know either, but I'm guessing that on the rare days when the Florida temperatures dip into the 50's or below, those fireplaces at WL and VWL would feel really good in the winter!

On a related note, be sure to take a look at the paintings that are hanging on the wall of the lobby/entrance of the Villas building (and in the Iron Spike Room--the room with the fireplace). Each depicts the Villas building in a different season--it's kind of neat to see what it would look like if it really was covered with snow in wintertime.

Anyone know if these are available as prints?

The WL/VWL host "sleigh rides" around the holiday season too. I think the resort itself plays up the whole winter theme in many ways to its advantage.

Well, there's nothing quite like walking into WL lobby when it's 99 degrees outside and hopping in a rocking chair in front of a blazing,seven story fireplace.
