VRBO problems

Has anyone who has used VRBO run into a problem getting their security deposit back? I've had to cancel my vacation nearly 2 months out and the owner refuses to refund my security deposit. Is there anything I can do?

Did it say it would be refunded if you canceled? Most security deposits are just that....security that you're coming on vacation....if something happens and you don't, you don't get it back. If it said you would get it back, I would let them know they had until a certain date to get it back to me or I would be contacting the authorities for theft.

Read your contract. I also would guess you wouldn't get it back in this event or at least not ALL of it. But it should be as stated in the contract.

Your contract is between you and the owner of the home and has nothing to do with VRBO...they only provide the forum for the rental listings.

Even at two months out, its not unheard of at all for an owner to retain the deposit. The chances of him/her being able to re-rent at this late date are slim, and they are entitled to not be penalized for you needing to cancel...IF the terms were spelled out in your lease agreement.

As the others have said...go back to the terms of the rental. That will determine whether or not you are entitled to a refund.

I would read your rental agreement. Mine states that they will impose a 20% cancellation fee if I cancel 60 days or more but they keep it all if I cancel within 60 days of the vacation.
