My 13 year old is asking for a oculus 2 or rift.
We are trying to decide if we should buy him one. Does anyone have one? I was afraid if I buy a $300 vr headset it will end up sooner than later under his bed.

dh got one a few weeks ago-he LOVES IT. dh has never been a huge gamer but this really has him interested. i will say-the graphics are spectacular, and as a side bonus the games are MUCH less expensive than the stuff my kids get for switch, ps4's and such.

we bought ours through costco online-the prices are about the same everywhere but at least costco's package threw in about $40 worth of accessories that dont come with the standard purchase.

Get the Oculus Quest 2...Oculus is abandoning the Rift and focusing on the Quest 2. The Quest 2 is the number one selling VR headset and the number one headset used on SteamVR. Plus the Quest 2 can do both stand alone and PC VR games.

dh just got a set of the prescription lenses you can put into the headset. he LOVES it, so much more comfortable for him to use.

thats awesome.
I'm looking into getting a strap for it to make it more comfortable.

My 13 year old son upgraded our older VR set for the Oculus Quest 2 shortly after it released and he loves it. Our older set was used every few days by him or his brothers, but the new Quest 2 is used every day by him. He says the graphics are amazing and it is much more comfortable to wear. We do have to put a timer on so he remembers to take breaks. Well worth the money.

I think the Quest 2 would be flying off the shelves if people knew, just how much of a game changer VR is and if they knew the price and value of it. At $299, its way cheaper than any other VR system. And the quality is pretty much the same as the $1000 headsets...the average person will not notice the few degrees of FOV between the Quest 2 and the other expensive options like the HTC Vive headsets.

Just a note, you do need a special cable, sold seperately, to use it with PC games (Steam). i ahve been tempted by it, but I don't like the Facebook integration - I don't have, nor do I want, a Facebook account. It is a nice unit though, especially for the price!

My son still has a Quest and I won't buy a Quest 2 for the same reasons. I don't have a FB account anymore and the entire "could be banned, lose library of games" thing freaks me out.

I will say though he loved it when he first got it, played it daily for many months. Now it just collects dust and he is back just playing PC games. I bought a few games and played it for awhile just to get use out of it. But that's how it goes with kids.

You can buy a third party USB-C to USB-A cable instead. I bought a 16ft cable for $16 on amazon and it works fine. However, I would suggest not buying a cable at all. Virtual Desktop app allows you to stream your PC VR games wirelessly! It works perfectly! In fact, its even better than using the cable, because you don't even need to open the Oculus app on the PC first...you just run the Virtual desktop streamer app on the PC and that's it. From the headset you can launch steamVR and you're up and running in seconds! I thought it might degrade the quality of the game, streaming wirelessly, but it didn't. Don't buy the cable, just buy the virtual desktop app from the Oculus store.
As far as the facebook account thing...I was a little concerned about that too, but we created a facebook account for my son and have had no problems. We on;y use the account for Oculus. Facebook also now allows multiple accounts to share Oculus apps and content on a single headset. I can't wait to play Half-Life Alyx wirelessly.

Disney also released Disney Movies VR for free a while back. Its on steam. For a free experience its pretty cool. Keep it mind, you can experience it wirelessly on the Quest 2.

Op update/ So I bought the quest 2 for my son for Christmas. It has been a great gift and now we are talking of buying a second. The biggest reason is the online game moonrider it's like beat saber but its free and has more songs
My son is a bigger boy for 14 wearing a 38" mens this game has him working out everyday and having fun doing it. He also plays recroom with
His cousin who has a playstation.
We also created a FB just for quest and nothing else. What's nice is it is a stand alone unit doesnt need a computer or any other items. I watch him through the app on my phone sometimes.

I think once more people experience VR for themselves (not the fake phone VR), everyone will realize how much of a game changer this is. The potential is huge and the apps we're already seeing are awesome.

For those that are missing the parks, there's also the MCParks mod in minecraft that allows you to walkthrough alot of the parks, rides and resorts...which, now you can do in VR via Oculus Quest 2, wirelessly!

Quest / Facebook = Too much invasion of Privacy. So No Thanks. I’ll wait fir the next gen Playstation VR.
