If anyone has worn a dress (vs a full length gown) for a vow renewal or wedding could you post a picture and/or give a 40something woman some ideas. DH and I are hoping to renew our vows in WDW in Nov. '07 and I can't seem to find anything on the websites that I think I would feel comfortable with. I have in my mind a tea length. The original wedding was not a disney wedding, but it was a formal. I was just thinking a small vow renewal.

I would recommend looking at J. Crew, which now has a wedding section.

Their gowns for brides are all very simple, non-poufy and elegant -- but they are all full length. However, look at their "bridesmaids" dresses, most of which are tea length and come in ivory. Very pretty stuff, and nice fabrics (lots of silk)!

Another good source is Jessica McClintock:

Just in general, look at bridesmaids dresses... they are making more and more of them in off-white or even white, and they look "bridal" without being too over the top.

Almost every bridesmaid manufacturer will do the dresses in white, ivory, cream, rum pink, etc. so you can have a simple dress that still fits the "theme" of bridal.

I got a Jim Hjelm dress - I'll try to put the pic up here - but in a different color. It is ivory with a sage underliner - so it makes a kind of soft green. My mom makes jewelry and made a necklace/bracelet/earring set out of sage bronzy pearls with swarovski crystal clusters. It is all gonna look fabulous!! :woohoo:

My dress was a bridesmaid dress that they made in white for me. It cost me $200. Not bad! Mine wasn't a vow renewal but it was on July 25th and I knew I was going to be hot so I wanted my dress lite. The woman at the bridal shop is the one who gave me the idea to go with a bridemaid dress. You would have never know unless i told you! :rotfl:

Alfred Sung is the designer of my dress. Here is is wedsite.

I agree with looking at bridesmaids dresses. I found a few tea length dresses that may work...

Dress 1

Dress 2...this is cute (you don't have to wear white if you don't want to)

Dress 3

Dress 4

Good luck! princess:

Maybe you should look at bridesmaids dresses. Tea leanth is seeming to be in style recently.
Or it sounds silly but im really one for custom dresses.
My mom and I are making my weddingdress and along with all other bridal party outfits.
I recomend seeing if you can find a local seemstress.
I dont know prices but patters and fabric arnt usualy too expencive and you get exactly what you want!

I'm thinking about getting an Alfred Sung dress. If you go to the link in the previous post and click on dresses, the one I looking at is D320 in white. The website will give you suppliers in your area, so I'm going to take a look and try it on maybe next week. I was really happy to find out I didn't have to order it online without actually seeing it.

Thank you I actually really like dress #4. I'm going to try to find the time this weekend to go to my local shop & check it out.

Keep them coming. I also like the idea of having the back flow longer than the front. I've only seen one like that though and I didn't like the bust- line of it. Anyone see any. I should probably mention I'm around a 40" bust. size 14 pant.

Excuse my confusion, but are Vow Renewal dresses really wedding dresses? Why buy a throw-away wedding dress or bridesmaid dress? Why not just buy a pretty dress that you can use again? Or I am being too practical?

personally, I like practical. That is why I would like a tea length. I plan to wear it again, I just don't want something my husband my see on a regular basis (especially if it is on someone looking alot better than me in it ;) )
I want something that will be special to us.

Good :). Then I would say that the suggestions given would not work for you. They are all too wedding-y. I would suggest that you go to Boston with your dress budget and buy a really nice dress that's not white and that is not a bridesmaid dress. Any of the big department stores should have what you need.

Well, it's all up to who is wearing it! Some VR ladies will wear an actual wedding gown with a train and all, especially if they had a very low key or "justice of the peace" type wedding the first time around. Other VR ladies will wear a dress off the rack in any color. I think most choose something special that you wouldn't normally wear. Right now though, white and winter white have been HUGE colors in fashion, so why not choose a dress in those colors? It is fashionable and suitable for a very special occassion!

And if you are going the Disney route with an Intimate DFW/VR and spending over $3000 for the event, I would think you would want to spend a nice $200 on a pretty dress - not just something found in your closet!

I never said that she shouldn't buy a new dress! Of course she should.

Lord & Taylor (www.lordandtaylor.com) has beautiful dresses in a variety of lengths, colors, shapes, etc. (They have GERAT semi-annual sales!!)
Also, Neiman Marcus and Nordstrom's have great dresses too :)

Hope this helps!!

I bought a beautiful aqua tea length cocktail dress to wear for my stepson's wedding. As I was buying it, I kept thinking that if we ever renew our vows, this is what I would want to wear..... so check out Nordstrom's, etc and any special boutiques you have in the area and buy something you love. The most important thing is for you to be happy with your choice.

I am one of the VR ladies who is wearing a wedding dress. I'm choosing a dress with some color...probably pink. I say to each his own. You know your taste and budget. I am budgeting according tothe things that are MUST HAVES. Enjoy your day and make it whatever you see it as being.

When I got married two years ago, I was looking at everything from prom dresses, to off the rack, to online stores for possibilities. A lot of the wedding dress boutiques I went to refused to make their bridesmaid dresses in white or ivory, and if they did, they charged 3x the amount. It sounds like that is not the case anymore, which I am thrilled about.

I've noticed many more tea length dresses lately. I just saw some very simple styles at Ann Taylor last night, actually. Eileen Fisher has great draping fabrices that are flattering for a lot of body types.

I would love to do a vow renewal one day, so I keep an eye out for possible dresses! Congrats!!! :lovestruc

I was married last year in a very simple white prom dress from The Deb Shop. And I hadn't even dreamed of walking into one of those "juniors" store in quite a long time. You may be able to find something with Homecoming season approaching. No one knew it was a "mall" prom dress that only cost $95.

I was a little uncomfortable wearing the traditional wedding dress since we were keeping it pretty simple (and knocking on 40's door). But then he chose to wear a tux anyway and my dress still looked classy enough.

I totally loved my dress. There were a lot to choose from in white and ivory. I was really surprised. JCPenney had some nice ones also.

Have you looked at the Coldwater Creek website (coldwatercreek.com)? They have a lot of nice dresses; a few are more formal.
