Voting rants

Does anyone think that with modern technology we could vote without going to the polls one day? Was talking about this with a coworker today.

We can do so much on line with our finances, etc. with passwords and encryptions why not voting?

Thoughts?

I'm not so sure it couldn't get hacked, but it sure would be nice.

I filled in a paper ballot and put the ballot in the wooden box. Tha same way that I have done it for the past 24 years.

My husband is one of the many volunteers that will count the votes tonight.

Sometimes I feel like I am living in the dark ages!!!

Why is that funny?

That the US has a miserable percentage of people who actually vote!
So its funny that you need an ID to vote when tons of people cannot actually even be bothered to vote. Where is the rash of people impersonating others???

Just seems backwards.

As I mentioned earlier in the thread, Oregon (and Washington) vote by mail. We don't go to polls. In Oregon we've done this for several years. So far, it's worked great, and makes it really easy.

Oops, obviously didn't read the whole thread:blush:.

I would LOVE voting by mail. What a wonderful idea!

I have no problem with the "fill in the bubble". That's how we did this year (last couple years were fully electronic). It was MUCH faster because multiple people could be filling out the ballot at the same time.

What I thought was crazy was TWO ID checks, filling out addresses, signing your name multiple times, and then tearing off one of the names you just signed.

We sign our name (with ID check), filled out the ballot, fed it into a machine. Done.

Well color me stupid. I totally didn't see the part about the 2 IDs. We showed one and signed our name.

Shouldn't someone have to prove that they are actually a citizen in order to vote? It has nothing to do with impersonating someone else. I see you're from Chicago, home of the dead voters in elections past.

Ours is electronic. I put in my card thingy (the official name, of course), check the appropriate boxes and submit, then turn the card back in to the voting official. Then I get a nifty sticker to wear all day. Easy-peasy here. :thumbsup2

Yep, us too. Easy, easy....and for us super quick, too.

Lol, Well doesn't all politics seem backwards? ;)

Ours was in a church (which I thought was kinda odd) and we had bascailly a multiple choice fill in the circle ballot. After your finished you walk over and insert it in the machine with a lady standing directly over it. I was holding DS since DH was still voting so the lady actually helped me put my paper in which since DS is so darn squirmy it was a huge help. I personally didn't care if she looked at who I voted for. However, I'm so ready to not have to deal with "your voting for _____, right?" at from customers. I had to stop my self multiple times a day from answering "First it's none of your business, second you tip me so of course I'm not going to tell you who I'm ACTUALLY voting for. So sure that's who I'm voting for." Normally I just shrugged and said " I donno" and changed the subject.
I wasn't asked for ID or even for my voter card they just asked name, address, and birthday. DH was asked for his voter card though so I guess it just depended on who you got. :confused3

NY used to have the lever machines in the photo unthread. The best part? Nothing electric except the lightbulb illuminating the choices. You prep the machine by one of the inspectors pushing a button. The voter closes the curtain with a big lever, chooses candidates by selecting small levers and reopening the curtain registered the vote. The machines were from the 60s but in my years as an elections inspector we never had an issue. When the polls close, you open the back of the machine and write down the numbers. The four inspectors all verify - 2 from each party - and you're done.

I've never had to show ID to vote.

That's how it's done here too!

I was asked and showed ID to vote today.. .I know it wasn't necessary this time around but what could it hurt? plus I didn't have to spell my last name over and over again :thumbsup2

I've always had to show id.
Does it not bother anyone that a non citizen could vote in an election or that someone could vote mutiple times?

I'm not sure what you mean by that. Do you mean that someone could let someone else vote for them?

I've never voted on a paper ballot. It's always been a machine with levers or buttons.
