for the first time ever this summer im going to be a volunteer at the hospital, and were called Guardian Angels. I wanna interact with the patients (its at a chidlrens hospital) and do several activities with them in example, paint, color, draw. arts and crafts. Has anyone volunteered at a hospital before, and how was your experience?

I did a few years ago as it sounds like the same type of job you will be doing. It is so rewarding. You will have alot of fun interacting with them and making them feel good.

i love working with chidlren, but im afraid itll feel awkward if the parents were there too. i just wanna be alone with them, cuz i feel like theyre watching my every move. ahh im getting paranoid lol

Most likely, you won't spend tons of times just sitting in patients' rooms. You'll be running around the hospital doing various activities. And it's a childrens hospital, don't you think those kids want their parents there? I mean, what you're saying is a bit selfish. You decided to volunteer there, you should do whatever they tell you to do.

I was a volunteen at the local hospital for the past two summers. Sadly, I will not be doing it this year. But, my jobs were to deliver flowers/cards/senior coupon thingies, to the patients' rooms. Also, me and several others were in charge of keeping everyone in the ICU waiting room comfortable. With coffee, pillows, blankets, reassuring words etc. We never just randomly went into peoples rooms and said we were sorry that they're sick.

My friend is doing that too! I'm not sure if it's for the kids or just to help around the hospital. But that sounds like fun! I'd love to help with the sick kids. Enjoy volunteering! :goodvibes

haha yeah i did sound a little seflish didnt i? i just love kids so much, i want them all to myself lol
and btw ill be working in the cancer ward, and most of them have leukemia. i feel at place cuz when i grow up i wanna be an oncologist. (cancer doctor)

I'm just warning you, you probably won't have tons of interactions with the kids. And they're sick, so the kids are worn out and tired. They don't really want some awkward stranger around them. And they're probably scared, scared of what's going to happen next.

I think it's great that you're all excited, but think of it from the childs' point of view.

I was a candystriper at a local hospital for one summer working in the maternity ward and accounting office.

During the 4 years of high school I volunteered in a 4th grade classroom.

During college I volunteered at a no-kill animal shelter.

This summer I am volunteering at the historical society in their archives making a container list for one of their document collections.

I am volunteering this summer at a Children's Hospital. We pick one clinical rotation where we work directly with patients and their families, and one non-clinical doing things like filing and office work. My clinical work is game cart (rolling cart stocked with games, books, magazines, toys, crafts, movies) and I roll it from room to room on all four floors dropping off games or even playing with the patients if they want me to. My non-clinical is working in the family library.
