My DD (who will be 12 during our next WDW trip) and I had a discussion about Make-A-Wish trips. Seems there is a little girl who used to go to her school who died of brain cancer who started a foundation for other kids who needed $$ for their treatment- and DD heard about Make-A-Wish trips from that.

We talked about Give Kids The World and the wonderful facility they have- DD has expressed interest in volunteering there this November.

Where do we go to get information about doing this? Is ther an age limit? Thanks for the info!

Hello. :wave2:

You can call 800-995-KIDS and talk to GKTW directly. :)

I think you guys would have a wonderful time volunteering.

They have some paperwork that you fill out and they do "on the job" training. You guys should be able to get an idea of what activities you could help with by talking to the folks at GKTW, but you can also read some of the Wish Trip reports here on the DIS by checking out the Wish Trippers Thread. :)

Wish Trip Thread with links to LOTS of Wish Trip Reports

PS: I see in your signature that you will be there in November....we will be there over Thanksgiving Week and will be volunteering at GKTW that week, maybe we will run into each other! :)

The website is here:
http://www.gktw.org/volunteer.asp

The Volunteer Criteria listed on the website was:
-Volunteers must be at least 12 years old.
-Parents or Legal Guardians must accompany volunteers under the age of 16 at all times.
-Parents or Legal Guardians must attend volunteer Orientation with any volunteer under the age of 18.
-All Volunteers must complete a volunteer application. All adults will be screened through a background check process.

Thanks so much for the info!! Unfortunately, we will be there different weeks- DD has a day off school for Veteren's Day (Thurs, 11/11), and we will be taking that week to visit- avoiding the T'giving crowds.

Heading over to the Wish trip thread now- thanks again!

Anytime!

Avoiding Thanksgiving week is probably a VERY good idea. :) We are going to be doing a lot hopping around to avoid crowds, I believe.

I think you guys will have a lot of fun volunteering.

If you are interested, you might find a family that will be at GKTW the same time you plan to volunteer - if you follow the wish trippers thread, I add any pre-trip reports I can find to the first page of the thread so that people can follow them - so if you see a family that will be there that week, then maybe you guys could actually meet at some point. I don't think we have anyone with November dates at this point, but we will as the date gets closer. :)

I have volunteered with my girls at GKTW, and it made a huge impact on them. We had a great time. Yes, 12 is the age requirement for volunteers.
