Okay, today i started making a list of all items in VMK and I started to put the list online. To see it, go to:

<removed>

I have put all the clothes and I have started on the furntiture. Pictures will be put in once I have got the lists finished.

If you notice anything wrong with any entry or feel I have missed something out (noting that I haven't finished it yet) please comment with the item and its details.

Thanks

Back to work.....................

not to burst you bubble or anything, but there is already a list of every item ever released in the VMK Guide at the top in a sticky

Just fair warning...that goes to an off-site webpage. I cleared my cookies after going there. No offense, but I don't know you that well.

Plus as Doc just mentioned, someone already did that. :confused3

I know that there is, but I thought that it wasn't very clear, and as I was working on one for myself, I thought I could try and provide a guide which was slightly easier to understand. Also that that guide is quite outdated.

It is not outdated it was actually just updated. I am not sure we can allow that link so I have removed it until I hear back from webmasters.

Wow, I actually think I might just stop doing the list, after seeing this one. Its much better than what I was imagining mine would be like.

I wasn't sure about links, and still aren't, is there somewhere where I can read up about what I can put in posts on disboards? After all, I am still quite new to forums, never bothered much with them before.

Sorry if I did something wrong.

Thanks for that, I get it now. Next time I think of doing this, I'll be sure to follow the appropriate guidelines

What I think would be extremely helpful would be a complete inventory in a reusable format like XML. Something like the Disney Online Worlds guide in a file format that we could import into other programs would be great.

Stupid question coming from a IT student, but is XML a microsoft excel file. XP doesn't tell you the file end anymore.

um, I'm an IT person and even I know that if you right click and choose Properties it tells you that info. :rolleyes:

XML is extensible markup language.

Your newsfeeds (rss) and podcasts are all XML files. Most modern web pages aren't HTML anymore but an XML format called XHTML. XML is a way to structure data where you define the structure any way you want. So if we had and XML format we wanted to use for VMK inventory items, it might look something like:

<furniture>
<item>
<title>Yellow Saddle Seat</title>
<availability>Buyable</availability>
<location>Shrunken Ned's</location>
</item>
<item>
<title>Spooky Tree</title>
<availability>Retired</availability>
<location>Shrunken Ned's</location>
</item>
</furniture>
<clothes>
<hats>
<item>
<title>Pirate Eye Patch Hat</title>
<availability>Retired</availability>
<location>In-Game Quest</location>
</item>
</hats>
</clothes>

The nice thing about it is that almost everything reads XML. You can import it into excel, you can add a style sheet to it and put it on the web, you could even read it in notepad. It's just text and the markup is descriptive. It would require everyone working on it to agree on standards for the structure and the data. But I think it might be very useful. Maybe I'm just a little far out there on the geek scale though. :confused3

Right, so if i would make one in xml, i have to write it all down like that? Can I just export?

I'm currently making it in Microsoft Access as a database.

XP most certainly does tell you the file extension, but you have to enable it in advanced folder properties.
98, ME, and 2000 all had the same function as well.

Ok, so obviouly mine isn't enabled to do that in properties, i think it may do it for some files though like music, pictures and video.

OK, so it seems I am not the greatest IT person, im only IT enough to get me through my A levels at the mo, but this all helps me learn!

Another learning question, how do I change the settings?

You could save as XML from right inside Access. But, if it's ike every other MS product the markup won't be very clean. You could play around with it and see what you get though. Save as XML, change the extension to .TXT then open it up in notepad and see what you've got.

If its actually wanted, i could try and do that, but it will probably take me a reallllllllllllllllllllllllly long time to do it as i have school starting in a couple of days and coursework and exams and holiday and lots of other stuff

to enable:

In Windows Explorer, any folder
got to Tools>Options>Folder Options>View
and then uncheck the box that says "Hide File Extensions for known file types"

In Win2k and XP having it checked is the default, in 98 and ME unchecked was the default.
