There are lots of great singers out there that never make it to stardom.
Lady Gaga has not become famous (infamous) because of vocal prowess. She's become famous for being outrageous.
Would anyone even be interested if she showed up in a simple black dress?
Raising the "outrageous" bar each and every time can be exhausting, I imagine.
It will be interesting to see what her next move will be.
She's a girl with unconventional magazine cover looks who has drawn from her kookiness to get her foot in the door. Had she merely depended on her vocal prowess, she wouldn't have made it farther than East Village Pizza and Kebabs.
People tend to make comparisons between Gaga and Madonna, Bowie, or Grace Jones, and rightfully so. But she reminds me of another unconventional girl who also started her career in the Village, whose vintage clothing and "kooky" behavior tended to overshadow her talent. She would show up to radio broadcasts looking absolutely ridiculous, photographers on the street kept guessing what strange or even dirty rags she'd be wearing that day. She would wear one outfit to get into a taxi, and another to get out, because she didn't want to be photographed in the same outfit twice in the same day. And she even went as far as to wear a sheer dress when accepting her Oscar that showed a lot more under the lights than she had originally planned.
So with Gaga, we're not talking about Taylor Swift or Rihanna or someone with the kind of beauty society tends to elevate overnight. So, instead, she draws you in with her other strengths (or the people who so control her career, it isn't clear at this point). Hell, how often did we read about Gaga's gender? Was she a man or a woman? Instead of growing defensive, she answered back by being even more ambiguous.
Let's see what she does next, because if she's anything like the woman I mentioned before, it can only get better.
