Viva Las Vegas, the Wedding

The cast:

• Me
• DH
• The Happy Couple (the folks we flew 2200 miles for to see them get married). The groom is a friend of DH’s that he has known since high school.
• Another 25-30 various and sundry characters who were also at the wedding extravaganza

Because of my DH’s work, he has to choose vacation time in November for the following year, because of this, his vacation was chosen long before we knew about this wedding. By doing a little finagling with his personal days, we were able to make a long weekend trip to Las Vegas to see our dear friends (known from here on in as the ‘Happy Couple’) get married in Las Vegas.

Friday October 11, 2002

We flew out of Logan Airport in Boston at 5:50pm on Friday evening, had a plane change/layover in Minneapolis (sorry Heidi, sorry Tamie, we had 40 minutes, no time for a mini meet). We arrived in Las Vegas around 11:30 Friday night (Las Vegas time), proceeded to baggage claim, and lo and behold, our bags made the connection!!!! Yay, we will NOT be attending the wedding in shorts and t shirts!!!!! We make our way to the taxi line. Think of the POC queue in MK where it just winds back and forth, and back and forth and back and forth…We waited about 45 minutes for a taxi, and then make the 10 minute trip to our hotel. We were fortunate enough to stay at Treasure Island on a discounted rate for the wedding party. By the time we had checked in, made our way through the casino to find the elevator and crashed in our room, it was about 1:30am. Mind you we were still on East Coast time, it was 4:30 according to our internal clocks. *yawn.

Saturday October 12 2002

We are awakened at 8am by the phone ringing. It is the groom, so I keep the snarl out of my voice at being awakened so early. He is calling to fill us in on the plans for the day/evening. There are girls and guys night’s out planned. We get moving verrrryyy slowly, and go and find some breakfast. We then do a tour of the casino. We have NEVER been to Las Vegas (or any other casino, so to say we were goggle eyed, is an understatement). After breakfast, the cell phone starts ringing, with the people who we know, trying to set up plans/meetings, etc. We finally get organized, and walk from Treasure Island to Bellagio to meet up with some friends. DH gets $40 in quarters, and as we are waiting for change, we run into our friends. We socialize for a bit, and then start a little playing. After about 20 minutes, DH hits a .25 slot machine, and has to be paid by an attendant!!!! YAY for us!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We tour the lobby of Bellagio (it is amazing, like nothing you have ever seen before) and go outside to see a couple of the fountain shows. The fountain shows run every half hour from noon until dark, and every 15 minutes until midnight. The show was really cool and pretty impressive. We stroll back to Treasure Island (this will become a theme, we walked our legs off!!!) as I have to meet up with the girls at 5:30 to head out to our dinner. Met with the bride, her mom, her mother in law to be a few friends and 2 of her sisters. We break into 2 groups, one to ‘walk’ to the Paris casino, as we were very close to our reservation time, and the second group strolling more leisurely. I made the mistake of going with the bride who proceeded to all but sprint to Paris. We had wine, cocktails and hors d’ouvres at Mon Ami Gabi and it was WONDERFUL. We were in a private room and were able to see some of the higher shots of the fountain show at Bellagio. (Paris is right across the strip from Bellagio). At this point one of the girls and I decided we are just wiped out, and break away from the group, to head back. She was staying at Circus Circus, but was going to walk back to Treasure Island with me, and then jump in a cab. She and I crossed the street to Bellagio, and saw the fountain show. It was stupendous. I get back to the room around 11pm and promptly fall into bed, and fast asleep. DH did not get back until 3:30AM!!!!!

Sunday October 13 2002 (the wedding day!!!)

Today is the big day, the reason we are in Las Vegas. We stroll downstairs to have breakfast and then go up to get ready for the wedding (12:30). We have had a message telling us to meet at the Battle Bar at Treasure Island at 12:15. Well, this is the bar/lounge that overlooks the bay where the pirate battle show takes place. It turns out that they are getting married ON THE SHIP! By the English ship captain. What fun! This is right out in front of the resort, so anyone walking by can stop and watch, and they do. When the time comes for the exchange of rings, a PIRATE swoops down from a crow’s nest to the deck on the rigging with the rings. Very cool stuff. The ceremony was lovely. When the ceremony is over, the wedding party goes to have pictures done. At 2:30 we have to meet in front of the hotel at the limo/taxi pickup area. We are taken by 2 enormous Sport Utility Limousines to the restaurant where the wedding dinner will be.

The restaurant was a small French restaurant called Le Pamplemousse and this was by far the best meal I have ever had. This restaurant has been voted the most romantic dinner in Las Vegas for several years, and it was wonderful. World Class 5 course dinner. About halfway through dinner, we have a surprise guest. Yep, you guessed it, Elvis came to entertain us for about 45 minutes. It was the younger, thinner Elvis.

After dinner our giant limos pick us up, drop off the flower girl and her parents at their hotel since it was very late. They then take us on a tour of the entire strip. From Mandalay Bay and the Luxor all the way back to Treasure Island. Talk about impressive. After the wedding it was only about 10pm, so we decided to go out (DH and I and one of his friends who was a groomsman). We walk down to Bellagio (notice a theme here? “we’re walking, we’re walking…) and see the fountains again (our friend had not yet seen them at night) and then we stay for about 4 of the shows. At midnight they do the last show of the evening, and it is to Whitney Huston’s version of the Star Spangled Banner. It brought tears to my eyes. Now it is late, and we are tired, so we slowly walk back to Treasure Island and bed.

Monday October 14 2002

Monday a lot of people had started to leave to head back home, but we were still around until Tuesday morning. A loose plan had been made that everyone who was still left was going to meet at the buffet at Treasure Island at 1pm for lunch. We sat around after lunch for about 2 hours, and then a bunch of folks decided they wanted to go to the Stratosphere to ride the roller coaster. My DH included. I am terrified of heights, and don’t like roller coasters, so I choose not to go. I wander around the hotel, finally find the pool (hee hee) and decided to spend $15 on slot machines. That $15 lasts me over an hour, and I end up winning this time! I am all by myself, the machine is dinging and dinging, and the man 2 seats down from me peeks over and says “Hey Miss, that’s really good” Again I have to call an attendant and they have to pay me, plus I have a whole bucket of quarters to turn in. They pay me, and then the male attendant walks me to a change booth since I was by myself. When my husband finally calls me, it is around 6 o’clock, and I tell him what happened. We decided since we are leaving early Tuesday morning, we will take my winnings and pay off 2 nights of the hotel bill. Talk about nice found money.

Between my husband’s winning on our first day, and mine on our last day, we only had to tap into $200 of our spending money, and only put half our hotel bill on our credit card. We did pretty well.

We decide to walk to Bellagio again (DH really likes the fountain show) so we do. It is around 9pm and who walks by us, but the bride and groom and a couple of the other wedding people. They stop and join us, collect their parents, and we watch a couple of the fountain shows. They decided to go have a drink at Paris, but DH and I head back to the hotel since we leave early tomorrow.

Tuesday October 15 2002

Our flight leaves at 7:00am, so we leave a 4am wake up call, AND we set the alarm. Boy was that early. We shower, finish packing, and head down to grab something to eat and check out. We get in a cab by 5:10 and are at the airport by 5:35. Check in goes fine, there is a bit of a line at security, and my DH sets off the metal detector. I get pulled out of line for additional security screening at the gate. (This makes the second of 4 legs of this trip that I get pulled out, not sure why I keep getting tagged, but it was fine.)

So that’s it. I apologize that it is a little long, and a little vague, if you have any specific questions, I would be happy to try and answer them. I do have to say that I really did not think I would care for Las Vegas I really REALLY enjoyed myself, and would go back again.

Thanks for reading.

Long post, but I still read it all....yay! Sounds like you had a wonderful trip. We were there about 3 years ago, we stayed at Treasure Island too, and saw the fountain/light show, and Sigfreid and Roy...yay! Took us 2 days just to walk though all the hotels. We enjoyed it also. :D

I never thought I would like Las Vegas but your trip report has changed my mind. It sounds like a lot of fun, even without a wedding.

Sounds great Deb!!!

Here's my question for you.....we aren't big gamblers. (sounds like you aren't either) but we think we want to go just to see everything. Do you think bringing the kids would work?

Wow! Sounds like a blast!

I guess the pirate ship did not battle the navy during the wedding! (visions of the sinking ship with the bride and groom on board!).

i've never been to vegas either...hmmm...a travel agent for 4 years and i never once made it to begas! how did that happen?

but vegas is hubby's very favorite place on earth. it's his "disney"! we were going to get married and have our honeymoon there, but i really wanted disney instead...i won! but i've promised him that we would go to vegas to renew our vows at some point and do one of the quirky weddings. i think it would be fun!!

glad you had a good time! i'm really looking forward to my first trip there...hopefully it'll be soon!

Jen,

You could absolutley bring the kids, just be aware they are not allowed to loiter in the casinos at all. If you wanted to gamble even a little bit, you would have to split up. But I think that's OK.

Scarlett,

I was really pleasantly surprised at how nice the wedding ceremony way. It was kitschy/quirky but at the same time it was lovely, and the officiant had some really nice things to say.

A&H's mom,

Yup, no battle during the ceremony, but they did get married on the Brittania (the one that sinks).

Browneyes,

Sorry, it was a small group, only about 30 total. Next time, OK?

Cool!! Sounds like a great trip!!

Hopefully someone warned you before you left that you'd be doing a LOT of walking!! :):) Everytime I've been to Vegas, I think I've always managed to lose weight (despite all the eating) because of all the walking you do in Vegas!

Sounds like a great time, debster! I always say I want to go there, but it never seems to happen. Reading your report makes me want to go even more. I guess for now we have to stick to Foxwoods, LOL!

Steve,

NO ONE warned me about the walking. This is coming from a born and bred New Englander where if you can see something, it is pretty close. However...in Las Vegas it is FLAT so you can see for miles, and everything looks closer than it actually is. The theme of the weekend was "People, we're walking, we're walking...lol"

Katie,

You should go! There are some great deals with hotels and flights.

Debbie

Whoops!! :o I guess it's too late now, but, ummmm, you do a lot of walking in Vegas! LOL! :p

Wow! What a great trip report. DH and I got married at the Treasure Island in 1996. I didn't even know you could get married on the ship! That must be new. We got married in the TI Chapel on the 2nd floor. We now go back to Vegas every year for our anniversary.... but we always rent a car. :p

Mr. Lyons,

You were duly warned. ;)

it is really long, I know.

Long but really interesting. It sounds like a lot of fun:)

A bump for Kallison to read, so as to convince her to go Viva Las Vegas.

Vegas is a great place to visit! I just love the Bellagio fountains. They always touch me...and make me teary eyed. I could watch them for hours.
Thanks for your wonderful report!
