Vitamin D too low?

My former neurologist said my low D was the cause for neuropathy. My current neurologist says everyone in the Northern Hemisphere has low D and it is over tested and over treated and really is not a big deal. I have no clue which doc is right!

OP - why would you feel the doctors are lying to you? What purpose would that serve?

Low Vit D is common - pretty much most Canadian adults are below normal Vit D levels, so we are well educated about low Vit D over here.

My numbers are usually in the 20s, which is very low. I take daily drops (liquid Vit D is the best). Can't take the large protocol that you are on, as I also have a liver dysfunction, and so they aren't sure if that will be an issue.

Please take your Vit D (which in actuality is a hormone, and not a vitamin), as it's linked to many health issues.

Good luck, Tiger
I do not feel that they are lying to me. I just feel like I have had way too many tests/procedures and wish the doctors would all coordinate the results. Then the result letters are alarming. "Dangerously low" is not a term I want to hear.

Much like instances of autoimmune disease have skyrocketed (really, really skyrocketed), it's a mystery.
Not really a mystery - the increase of GMOs in our diet correlate with the increase in autoimmune disease.

"Teams of medical researchers in Parkville, Australia and in Albany, Ohio have identified specific proteins present in Monsanto GMO grains. These engineered proteins trigger gluten sensitivity and can instigate celiac disease. Internationally, we have been experiencing epidemic levels of gluten intolerance: over 40% – virtually half the US population – now cannot metabolize gluten. Celiac disease affects one in 133 Americans."

We've been taking D3 supplements for a few years now. Darling son's doctor actually did a blood test and said he was a bit low, so it was added for him. I started taking it to hopefully keep away the winter bugs. Its been working like a charm! If I feel like I'm getting a cold, amazingly, within a couple days the symptoms are entirely gone without getting a full blown cold. No flu in years either.

I'm glad I ran across this thread - my Dr diagnosed me as Vitamin D deficient (level of 10) and I pretty much blew off taking the supplement. I'm supposed to take 6000 units a day for 8 weeks, then down to 2000 units a day continuously. Now that I'm reading these stories I'm going to take it!

I also tested low. Was put on a prescription supplement and it rose, but not where my doctor wanted it. Now I take a daily supplement. The way my doctor explained it to me was that proper Vit D levels is the gateway for calcium absorbsion. She wants me also on calcium supplements, being over 50, and the calcium won't absorb if the Vit D is low. I also run and at one point was having some pain in my legs when running. A fellow runner suggested looking at my Vit D level and sure enough, once I started getting those Vit D levels back up, the pain went away. Vit D levels need to be taken seriously as have a great impact on our general overall health.

So many people are low, and you don't know it! It is partially because we are so sun conscious now and many of our jobs are indoors.

We test all newborns were I work and many are deficient because their moms are. You don't realize what a huge impact Vitamin D makes on your body! It can help your metabolism so you lose weight, it keeps your bones strong, keeps joints from being achy, wards off some tummy troubles :). Everyone should be checked!

i also tested low at 17 over a yr ago....................brought it up to 29 at last test............... my docs are very cautious about how much supplementation to take .....so the maximum they allow me is 2000iu/day ( both my gp and cardio)............ vit d is a fat soluable vitamin and can act as a hormone........... and can lead to toxicity in some people....so u really have to have a doctor monitor u while taking....... here is a link to the Mayo clinic............ my doctor had a cow when i told him i was taing 5000iu a day......... http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/vitamin-d-toxicity/AN02008

Here is a neat video about vitamin D that is actually very interesting. Snuggle up with a cup of tea (it is snowy here today) relax and watch. It has been many months since I have watched it. It is about an hour long but worth it.

Good to watch! Thank you! Inever had any idea this was so common. Mine always happens in the fall and winter. I notice how cranky I am, how stiff I feel, how tired I feel after afull nights sleep!
Took the first 50,000 mg yesterday. I felt more normal today but still I'll see how I feel in a few weeks.
Told DH we needed a tanning bed. I was kidding but he said he liked the idea. He has never had a tan his whole life.

Good lord, if he buys one, I'll kill him.:rotfl2:

Much like instances of autoimmune disease have skyrocketed (really, really skyrocketed), it's a mystery.

I have a theory. I think it is from an overuse of anti-biotic in medicine form along with a huge over use of external anti-bacterial substances. They are all seemingly good on the surface, but, they are preventing our own system from working on what is should. Looking for something to do, it attacks us directly.:confused3

Before you all come after me with pitchforks and torches. I am not a Doctor or a scientist...it's just my opinion. Of course there is that little thing about me always being right...but you can choose to ignore it if you like. :rotfl:

This thread inspired me to re-order my liquid Vitamin D.

I got hives from the Vitamin D pill.

Ordered it from Costco - should be enough to last 2 months.

I have been in the doldrums lately. Just kind of blah. I am hoping this will be a pick-me-up during these dreary gray months.

I have had blood tests done for the past year and a half every 2 months. First it was too much calcium, then not enough magnesium. Now the tests show I am so low on Vitamin D it is off the charts. They put me on 50,000 MG a week besides the 2,400 mg of magnesium, and a potassium supplement a day. I am not a sick person! I walk, I work, I exersize. I weigh 150 at 5'6". Well, not good, but not over weight.
BP was 127/70 this week and DR says it needs to go down more. Cholestorel is good, under 150.
I feel like these Doctors are pulling my chain. I also get B6-B12 shots once a week.
If you have ever had low Vitamin D, I have questions.
Should I find a different DR? I know, DUMB question but DH says trust them.
WWYD?
Thanks if you answer, Karen

I have a D deficiency and I can't seem to "fix" it. I take a 2000 mg supplement daily and my dr. (After a blood test) that it's still too low.

Maybe I should sit in the sun more?

Loved the video of Dr. Holick. I just ran to the store for vitamins since I absolutely need them living in the pacific northwest.
