Will the state of MA actually have an incarcerated person go through heart surgery by themselves with no visitors?

Are you asking if they would require visitors? Not sure why they (or any other hospital) would require visitors when someone's in surgery...

I think the only exceptions might be some outpatient procedures where you'd have to have a person present who could drive you home after the procedure.

Sorry to say the answer could be yes. I know someone who was incarcerated for tax evasion and while in a minimum security prison he had a heart attack. Well his wife was one that went to see him every weekend and when she went to see him they calmly told her he was not there and would not give her any information as to where he was. It took three weeks for her to find out he had the heart attack and was in the hospital.

My BIL used to escort prisoners to the hospital and stay with them to make sure they didn't escape or whatever and they were not allowed visitors.

Make sense to me...they are prisoners they don't have the same rights as other people!

Coulda fooled me! ;)

When U commit a crime U give up certain rights maybe this is one of them. It's not like they would be in solitary. The person would still have dr, nurses, guards.

Like I tell people if U dont want to do the time. Dont do the crime. The chances of getting caught are greater with all the technology nowadays. Yes I do know several people that are incarcerated. No I do not visit them. I did nothing wrong why should I be subjected to the scrutiny involved in visiting them. If they were not incarcerated we could visit when we felt the need. It is not my fault they are where they R. I write to them. I send them cards/letters. I will even pay for the occasional phone call. But that is as far as it goes.

I think if they are hospitalized, they should be allowed at least some supervised visits by family members. If only for a few minutes. Unless it poses a serious security risk, I don't see why they shouldn't.

It is incredibly expensive to provide security for prisoners taken to a hospital. Allowing visitation in such an uncontrolled venue would be substantially more expensive, and it is very unlikely that any state's taxpayers would be happy about picking up the tab for that.

I agree, and can see where this could conceivably endanger the hospital staff. I've taken care of prisoners admitted to a general hospital (one without a locked ward) in the past, and felt a little unease for fear that a friend/family member would discover where the prisoner was and attempt an escape. BTW, I don't know about other hospitals, but we were NOT told the nature of the prisoner's offense. There were a couple who were so notorious that we knew, but generally, we did not.

I think the issue is that it's not a "right" in the sense of something that would be legally protected whether you are incarcerated or not. I wouldn't be willing to pay for additional security in order for a prisoner to have his or her family present during a recovery period. I agree with those who say it's part of the punishment leveled at you if you have committed a crime. Should have thought about it before you committed the crime!!!!
