Visiting New York advice

Im confused, what is this???
look at experiencetheride.com Its a touristy ride around Times Square that focuses on performances not sight seeing - I've done it and we loved it though I got a coupon from living social
there is also the tour that is more for new visitors or traditional sight seeing -

Almost all broadway shows offer rush tickets, which means you walk up to the box office 2 hours before show time and they are selling any unsold seats for a discounted rate. If you aren't set on a specific play (or one of the most popular), you can get seats for $30 a person (we do this a lot on weekends when we don't have plans and have seen dozens of plays for $30 or less). Popular plays sometimes have a lottery, where you can enter to win tickets (win the chance to buy them for cheap). I've seen wicked and book of mormon through the lotteries, and both times the seats were in the orchestra.
Sorry, just want to correct the B'way information since I work in the industry and deal with ticketing for my program. This isn't exactly true. You have to check to see which shows offer rush tickets at about $30 or $35. Not all do. Often they are only for students with valid ID. You can check the shows individually on their websites or through playbill.com to find out who offers rush tickets. TKTS offers same day discounted tickets and they are located at 47th and B'way. They have discounted tickets for both matinees and evening performances but you cannot get those discounted tickets at the box office. They are much more than $30, but still a great price and seat locations are often very good. True about the Wicked and Book of Mormon lotteries which happen about 2 1/2 hours before the show (check the websites for times). They are very popular and I wouldn't count on getting tickets. I needed to reply because I unfortunately watched someone the other day walk up to a box office when I was picking up tickets and ask for a discounted "unsold" ticket. The box office person kind of scoffed at him and offered him a full price ticket. Just want make sure you have the correct info.

Thanks! I plan to for sure get tickets ahead for wicked. However other posters indicated les mis tix were easy to get day of yet tink feels this is top priority to get tix early on this one. So I am not sure what to do on les mis. I did find discount tix on ticketsatwork which hospital dh works at has discounts etc. so I will pre buy for sure! Still a discount.

I had dh read this whole thread along with trip report from abd goers who experienced the abd trip and gave trip reports etc.

Thanks to the few that offered thoughtful advice on statue being skip able. I think we will. As tink pointed out it is 55 blocks to the ferry for it. But Ellis island still does hold appeal...I assume a subway ride would get me here and I coukd just stay on ferry to Ellis drop point but not sure on that yet.

We are a party of 3 and we always do 2 bathrooms when we can. With a 16.5 year old we learned the hard way! So Manhattan club fits the bill for this.

U guys have been great in helping us make travel plans. I told dh he has to make the call to abd or not

And honestly I understsnd the sticker shock of adventures by disney. I guess bc I experienced backstage magic in California and went into the trip sort of hoping I didn't walk away regretting it. It was the best vacation we ever took. So I get biased when abd is involved bc what looks simple on paper is amazing in person at least for backstage magic.

We saw Wicked. Only 10 of the 15 of us did. And 3 saw Book of Mormon and 2 saw Jersey Boys. We saw the shows on Dec 27th and bought tickets about a month prior. When looking at ticket prices, the cheapest we could find Wicked for was $120 (total with taxes/fees). We looked up other shows and they were all more...Book Of Mormon, which niece and nephews saw, was over $200 a ticket. Rockettes were crazy expensive too. So we grabbed the Wicked at $120pp. I will try to find the site I bought them off of and get back to you. I think the timeframe we went (between Xmas and NYE) was expensive.

If you bought them anywhere besides telecharge.com or ticketmaster.com you probably bought resell tickets. Even if you go through playbill.com or broadwaybox.com or any other discount website it will redirect you to the regular website. There are a few new places that sell discount tickets like tickets today but those are usually catered towards locals since they are more last minute discounts. A few shows do digital lotteries but once again very last minute discounts with no guarantees. Other do in person lotteries and others only do student rush which means student tickets go on sale when the box office opens and you need a student ID to get them.

Buying tickets a month before the busiest broadway week is probably why that was all that was left for your guys.

Entertainment link...we had to pay membership fee of $39 or something like that. And then they did come through ticketmaster I believe.

If you ever come back to NYC please do not use that website again. You are very lucky they are real. The few reputable "subscription" ticket services give free or discounted tickets not face value. Just want to save you heart break.

Eeekk! Glad we got our tickets. I must say, I was a little worried about it. It was a lot of money to get cheated out of but they came through and we got all 10 seats in a row. It was the rear mezza though.

Oh goodness. Rear mezz seats even on the busiest week should have only been about 60 bucks. I'm not sure of any theater that sales at 120 even Hamilton isn't 120 for rear mezz if you get them direct. I could be wrong since I'm local I don't often go during the busy season but that price seems high.

Yeah, see, I liked the show but was thinking 'not worth $120pp so this will be my first and last Broadway show'. But $60pp, I might go again. I'd like to see Chicago.

Hope you have a great trip! You can usually get 40-50% discounted same day tickets to Les Miz at the TKTS booth. If you have a smart phone, you can download the TKTS app to see what shows are discounted that day. As others have said, try broadwaybox.com too, but TKTS will be cheaper. Great show!

Can anyone tell me about visiting New York. I would like to do a mom amd daughter trip. We would love to go with a tour group.
Use Priceline negotiater to book a hotel , if you check out the better bidding website prior to bidding you can get an idea of what to bid, I have saved $$$ doing this when I travel and have never been disappointed

Also check the chain hotel websites. Most offer discounts (AAA, AARP, military, government employee- which if you work for a public university or even a school you are eligible for), and some have discounts for their frequent travel club members. Just sign up for the rewards club and then search online for "discounts for whatever chain" for codes. (Hilton Honors has great discounts). We stayed at the Wydham New Yorker in a metro queen (1 queen bed, HUGE floor space, fridge/coffee maker, big bathroom) for less than $200 a night, taxes included, in June 2015. It is a great location, right across from Penn Station so it made taking Amtrak very easy- just a walk across the street- and we had a great view of the Empire State Building from our window. This is maybe a 10-15 minute walk into Times Square, and felt very safe walking back after an evening show (using city street smarts, of course!). We've also stayed at the Hampton Inn Times Square on W. 41st street for $235 a night, taxes included, in NOv. 2015. This is a GREAT price for the location, and included breakfast. We didn't have a vehicle either time, but when we stayed at the DoubleTree Suites right IN Times Square, the parking was $40 a day and definitely worth it; there were 5 of us and driving/paying to park was the cheapest form of transportation!

One of our favorite things to do on our first night in NYC, if the weather is nice, is to take an open-air EVENING bus tour (Grey Lines, I think). You load in Times Square and drive around the city as night falls and the city lights up. This tour goes over the bridge into Brooklyn, so you get a great view of NYC after dark. This is usually a pretty informative tour; we try to take it on the first night in case there's anything we didn't know about that we decide to add to our schedule. Other than this, I would skip the hop-on-hop-off buses in NYC. You spend more of your time sitting in traffic than anywhere else, and in the summer if you sit on the top it's HOT and all you smell is traffic fumes.

I'd look at a map and group my touring accordingly. For example... from Times Square, walk up the west side of Central Park to the Museum of Natural History. You can wander through the park a bit on the way, see Strawberry Fields (memorial to John Lennon, by Yoko Ono) and see the Dakota (where he was killed, and I believe she still lives there). You can also walk through Lincoln Center if you are interested in seeing this along the way. We didn't care for the Musuem of Natural History, which was surprising as DH and I are both scientists. We did, however, LOVE the Metropolitan Museum of Art- MUCH more than just artwork! If you are on the west side of the island at the Natural History Museum, I'd take the cross-town bus across the park to the Met. I'd plan 3 or 4 hours at either museum, and that doesn't include transport time.

If you are interested in Rockefeller Center, make that a destination. You could go early and hang out with the Today Show crowd if you hope to get on TV (not our thing). Options in that area are the NBC Studio Tour, which we enjoyed, Radio City Music Hall tour (loved this, but DD's done training programs with the Rockettes for 2 summers so it's kind-of "our thing!"), Top of the Rock (want to do this... get your timed ticket early in the day, when you can choose your tour time... and I'd go during either during the day, for the view, or late at night, for the city lights). There isn't a lot to see at Rockefeller Plaza, but you are within walking distance of St. Patrick's Cathedral and 5th Avenue if you want to window-shop at or go into the high end stores. The Museum of Modern Art is also in this neighborhood, and is SO worth it! I'd plan 2 hours each for RCMH, TotR, and NBC, longer at MOMA, maybe 30 mins at the cathedral.

Head Downtown for Empire State Building, 9-11 Musuem/tribute, and the Statue of Liberty/Ellis Island. You'll need tickets for all of these, and I believe both 9-11 and SoL are timed. If you are doing Top of the Rock, skip ESB- same city, same view, although for movie buffs ESB can be mecca! I haven't been to the 9-11 exhibits so don't have any advice. SoL/EI... you need to know that there is only ONE ferry service that can actually STOP at either of these Islands. I believe it's statuecruises.com Anything else that advertises SOL is just a float-by, not an opportunity to get off the boat and onto the islands. We love the SoL and EI. I don't go into the crown anymore, but DH and DD22 have done this. You should be advised that to get to the crown, you go up and down a very, very narrow, tight, spiral staircase; DH was unable to stand up straight, and you cannot put your foot fully down on the steps. I enjoy going into the pedestal- there's a museum there about the Statue's history, construction, etc. and there's an outdoor walkway at the top of the pedestal/base of the Statue itself. DH and DD both say they wouldn't go to the crown again- it's a strenuous hike and the view isn't all that great as the windows/viewing area are quite small. We all love Ellis Island, and can spend about 3 hours there, walking through the exhibits and doing the audio tour. Security will be high at Battery Park, where you get the ferry, and even higher over on the Island if you are going into the Statue herself.

Theater tickets- get the tickets for Wicked (and Hamilton, if you are interested) before you ever leave home. Except for that small, chancy lottery, you won't get a discounted Wicked ticket. Try to purchase directly from the theater, NOT one of the resale sites. You just don't know if you'll get real tickets or not- or if they are resold (i.e., grossly overpriced). We usually get our theater tickets either rush (be at the box office at 9am with cash and appropriate ID- check theater websites for their rush/lottery programs) or through TKTS in Times Square. Decent prices, decent seats. Check TKTS.com to see what's been available for shows and the approximate discount. We've also had good luck through broadwaybox.com

Food- We like Becco (between 8th and 9th Aves, I think). Becco has great prices for Manhattan, we think, even the wine and the food is terrific. We've had great pizza at JOhn's, I think, across from the DoubleTree Suites in Times Square, and there's a place next to it that lets you pick your protein, starch, sauce, and veggies and they stir fry it for you. There are LOTS of cafe-like places in the Times Square area (even if they are local chains, like Cafe Europa) and the Halal guys (food trucks) in the area are inspected by the city and have good food. I would definitely NOT go to places like Steak&Shake, Olive Garden, TGIFriday's, etc. Check trip advisor.com for food in the neighborhood where you are staying. If all else fails go to Whole Foods in Columbus Circle- the most amazing food bar/buffets anywhere!

Yes. Seeing the Statue from many places is just fine. But we really liked Ellis Island. There was a lot of neat stuff and facts to see and read there. When we went the first day and missed the last ferry, my family said 'we'll come back tomorrow' and I was kind of thinking 'no need, I'll sleep in' and I took a picture right there from the shore. But I went back the next day and was glad I did as Ellis Island and standing in that room where my ancestors may have once stood...really cool. Maybe could skip it though. Now, 9/11 Memorial and museum is a must do. Inlaws told us to skip Central Park in lieu of going to see the diamond district. DH, my DDs and I went to Central park and I am glad we saw that...and got a waffle dessert at Waffel and Dinges kiosk that was YUMMY!
We had waffels and dinges cater our wedding for dessert!

The ferry goes is a loop, first to the SOL, then to Ellis Island, then back to NYC (or NJ - don't get on that ferry).

I have 5 teens, and we've stayed places with just 1 bathroom many times! I think the Affina has some suite rooms.

Love Becco-owner Lydia has a great Italian cooking show on PBS
The pasta trio meal (lunch or dinner) is a GREAT NYC value-3 very different and unique pasts dishes....but it was the seafood Appetizer that came with it that was also DIVINE-and right near the Theater district!
