I'm taking a cruise of Europe, and I see many places of "old towns" there are many cobblestone streets. I have a hard time walking on uneven pavement and some people suggest using a walking stick.

Since the Disboards is the only discussion site I frequent, I wonder if you could help me out. Are walking sticks helpful in your experience of seeing visitors traveling these older type streets?

Thanks.

I's sure you'll be fine. Cobble streets may be a "little" uneven but nothing major. In fact many towns have "modern" cobble streets as they look so nice.

I often visit York which is famous for its cobbled streets and you see many toursits/visitors using walking sticks.

I'm sure the walking stick will just give you that extra confidence but i'm sure you will be fine. The streets are not that uneven as Health and SAfety would not allow it these days for fear of being sued!

Have a great trip!

Thanks for your assurance, and I've been to places in the UK like Windsor Castle, but there are other places in less prosperous countries, like Poland, Russia that we are also visiting. I suppose I'm more concerned about these. I posted in the UK forum because I just don't know where else to ask. How about when you visit the other European countries as a visitor?

Many moons ago I did a lot of travelling around Europe visiting many cities and towns but these were mostly in Western Europe so I can't comment on the Eastern parts.

If it's an organised tour I'm sure you will be fine otherwise they would have to state not suitable for elderley/infirm etc - not meaning any insult by this :flower3:

If you are unsure why not get a hiking type of walking stick, can be sued for all sorts of terrain?

Hiking pole.

OK...that's along the line of what I'm thinking about...the ones that I had seen prior seemed to have more of a point at the end...thank you for helping me find what I need!

PS. No offense taken at all!:flower3:DH and I are thrilled to have this chance to go. Poland is the homeland of all of my DGP's and I am so glad that I'll be able to be there for the brief stop. I just have to see the birthplace of Solidarity. DH will do his best for me!

My mum uses a walking stick and has quite a variety of them (she'll use any excuse to shop! :rotfl2:) but she likes the Leki brand ones when travelling, they're the hiking type and suitable for pretty much any type of terrain plus they fold up :)

I'm ordering a Leki one now, and will let you all know how it works when we return from our cruise in September. Thanks to all for the suggestions.

PS. Now I have viewed the CD from DFs who have been on the cruise and saw the terrain in the shore excursions, I am convinced that it will help me.

Good to hear you have decided on which pole to get. At least if you need it you have it :)

Claire ;)
