E're planning a trip to WDW in May and my kids want to see WWoHP. Do we need to plan a stay on-site at Universal to get to the rides first or will we be OK with an early drive from Shades of Green ?

If it is in early May you should be fine. Make sure you avoid Fridays, though, as school groups tend to fill the parks.

Sorry- meant to add the dates. We are planning to be there from May 10-18, 2013.

This past May we were there the 7th-13th. The express pass wasn't a must have, no huge crowds. The posted wait times only exceeded 30 minutes a few times for a few select rides (Spiderman, FJ, ect -mainly the headliners). Pick a Sunday, Tues or Wednesday if you'll only have one day.

Harry Potter gets really crowded by mid morning. Having the early entry really helps. If you find it too crowded come back later in the evening as the crowds start to leave around dinner time. Don't be too put off by the posted wait time for Flying Journey, it takes a good 20-30 minutes just to walk through the castle and "see" everything so a wait time of 45-60 minutes is not as bad as it sounds. ;)

Those dates will typically fall into a "dead zone" before schools are getting out and the busy summer travel season starts...so you should be pretty good as far as crowds go.
