Does anyone have Heritage Vision Plan? I believe it is only available in Michigan. We're considering switching from VSP because it seems like I still end up paying a lot when I get glassses with my VSP plan. Heritage seems to cover more.

I am an optometrist and what I see is that unless your company pays your premium you may be better off to pay cash then have vision insurance many times. Many of my patients pay $25 a month for their plans, thats $300 per year. Ask your doctor if he has a cash discount price for an exam and or glasses. At my office standard glasses and exam would only cost about $250.
Vision insurance isn't like health insurance because they are not insuring you against unexpected diseases, you are buying coverage for routine care. What you pay has to pay the doctor and the insurance company has to make a profit. I know many offices will try to sell you options you may not need to help make up the money they loose to the insurance company. ( This also happns alot in the "mall" places that advertise low prices.) Also consider that some plans may severely limit what doctors you see. Make sure you are getting a DILATED exam as this is the only way to thoroughly check the health of the eye. Some plans only cover a screening. Good Luck.
