visa/ESTA for getting back in the US from London

I just booked our airfare for the British Isles cruise--
were flying from Chicago to London going our were on american but coming back were on British

so according to the British website I needed to add our passport numbers and contact info
but then it also said about having a VISA or ESTA in order to board the flight to the US
Im really confused on this one
anyone else hear of this

yet I had to fill in the same passport info on american (both flights are booked through the american website)
and there it said you only need a US passport

also when I filled in the passport info on american it wouldnt let me save it unless since I did it on British webiste but the flight info still says I need to fill in passport info
my head is starting to swim again

US Citizens do not need a visa to enter the US. Just a passport
