For those that have done a cruise with a virtual porthole room, is it like a round flat screen TV, so that it lights up your room at night? Do you have the option to turn it off if so?

Yes, you can turn it off at night. It looks just like a porthole, but it's on an interior wall, so you're not actually seeing "out". It's a video feed.

So that's what I'm wondering, if you had a real porthole, when it's nighttime there will be no light coming from it, but since the virtual porthole is basically a round TV, it emits light even though it's dark outside?

No, if there are no lights in the view that the video camera is aimed at, there would be no light (or not much). Much like a TV with no picture (but it's on).

It does glow when you have it on, but you can turn it off. It hangs above the big bed in the room. We would turn it off at night, and it was very dark in our room. We had no concept of time. One night we were up late and slept until 9:30 the next day! We never do that! I turned on my phone to see what time it was, and I jumped out of bed! There was a Dopey meet and greet we wanted to do at 9:45! We made it, but it was close!

When I had it on, even when it was dark, I could hear/feel the sound/buzz/crackle sort of thing many hear from a TV. We had to turn it off.

Our experience was that at night, it changed from a live feed from the ship exterior to a cartoon-like nighttime image of the sea/stars that did emit a faint glow, about as much as a night light. You can turn it off with a switch.

I'll also add, it gives you the view of what wall it is hung on, so if the wall is facing the front of the ship you have a forward view, the aft walls have the aft view, and port and starboard are also those views

We've been in cabins in both virtual and real portholes. With the real porthole, you'd be surprised how much moonlight comes into the cabin! And, sometimes lights from on the outside of the ship provide a glow.

And, yes, we just turn off the virtual porthole at night. Otherwise, when it gets dark outside it is kinda like having a tv station turned on to a static station.
