"Virginia moving to eliminate all accelerated math courses before 11th grade as part of equity-focused plan"

Honestly, I don't even know of any reputable sources anymore. They are all awful.

Anyone in Virginia with some inside information on this?
A quick google search shows they are the only ones reporting it. My gut tells me something is being taken out of context.

ETA: the only recognizable site. But all others have just copied that same exact story

"All students in grades kindergarten through 10 would receive the same foundational courses, and students in 11th and 12th grades would choose among diverse course offerings based on whether they plan to go straight into the workforce, trade school, college or the military."

So everyone takes the same Math until 11th grade? That is crazy! Again, I hope this is wrong.

I’m in my 40s and in we all took the same math classes until 11th and 12th. 🤷‍♀️

It sounds like they're really just rearranging the math, so instead of algebra 1, geometry, algebra 2, etc, students just take “math.” Our districts already do that (Southern California) and it works well and leads to less loss of concepts over time because the materials spiral year to year. Everyone gets to precalculus under our scheme, and there are two opportunities to accelerate to get to Calculus AB and BC. There are also “foundational Math” courses for each year for students that need more support.

edited for spelling

Wow. Not my kids. I have two that completed Algebra 2 in 8th grade. Both completed AP Calculus in 11th grade.

My others weren't as strong in math. But I couldn't imagine holding the other two back.
In 8th grade we all took pre algebra. Algebra 1 in 9th, 2 in 10th. 11&12 you could choose other stuff. I graduated in 96 from a school that ranks pretty well in academics.

Just to be clear, the idea of pathways isn’t new. My kids’ high school have them - they pick for their Junior & Senior year. Math also went to Math 1, 2 & 3 (and away from algebra, geometry, algebra 2) a long time ago. Kids pick a speciality math in their pathway their senior year (my oldest will take stats).

So I stand by this is being taken out of context or spun to be something it’s not. It’s been happening in schools for quite awhile.

I’m sure if differs from state to state but in my state we had the below average classes, the average ones and the accelerated ones. It worked out well because we could take average classes where we did average work but could be challenged where we excelled.

Yes, and if you actually read the article objectively without the twist the outlet is trying to give, that's what the article explains is the plan.

Just to be clear, it would be very new if it was introduced in my school district. I believe a child should be able to move ahead if they have the ability to do so. I am glad our school district feels the same way.

Why would you hold students back that can do more? Why would you place them with average students?

That is how it works in my kids school currently.
Advanced courses are only available to 11th and 12th graders, along with other math courses like business math and others I can't recall. My ds (12th grade) is taking pre-calc but had his choice of several courses.

I'm reading it. It says 11th and 12th grade is when you can branch out. Kids are taking college level classes in 10th grade at our school. My children were behind others by waiting to taking AP Calc in 11th grade. Why would anyone want all students to be on the same course until they reach 11th grade?
