My family has been going to the mountains of NC for the past 15 years. I really want to try something new this year before our kids start to go off to college. My kids have never seen the ocean! I am looking for house/town house rental suggestions for 2 adults, and 5 kids- 2 17 year olds, 15, 12, and 7 year old. What activities are there for families? I am planning this on my own and know that I will be "blamed" if it doesn't work out! We will be driving there.

If you want a nice house, we love staying in Sandbridge. It's part of Virginia Beach but without all the hotels. It's all homes.

Try Sandbridge Realty. They have lots of rental homes with plenty of pictures. We haven't been in two years but we LOVE it there.

Do you actually swim in the water at sandbridge I have heard that is where they see the most sharks:scared1:

Of course we swim at Sandbridge!! It wouldn't be a beach without swimming!!:rotfl: In addition to Sandbridge Rentals, there's Siebert's. Their offices are right next to each other.

We love Sandbridge, but I have to offer a caveat: it's several miles from civilization. Meaning, the Boardwalk, movies, restaurants, even fast food. So if you like a more fast paced beach vacation, I wouldn't recommend it.

However, if you're the type to stock up with lots of groceries for meal ideas, and happy playing Wii or boardgames/cards, and just chilling, you'll love it. It's very wild, with lots of dunes, vegetation, and wildlife. It borders a refuge park that you can walk or bike through.

Check out VacationRentals.com from homeaway. We rented a condo through them in Wildwood, NJ and it was really nice and affordable. Or you could try VRBO.com or Craigslist.

We used to go to Virginia Beach all the time when the kids were little. There's a lot to do there and free entertainment and fireworks....whaaaa, I want to go back!:rotfl:

Our family loves Sandbridge too. We got a great rate on a large house with a pool, on the canal and two houses from the ocean. We were close to Virgina Beach and had dinner there once.

When we stay in Sandbridge we usually just drive into Virginia Beach for dinner. By then everyone has had enough ocean/pool time. So we get dressed and drive the 15-20 minutes for dinner a couple nights the week we are there. We usually take that time to hit the boardwalk for shopping and ice cream. There are always concerts and fireworks.

Our son loves the beach. He's more than happy to dig a hole all day. :lmao:
We usually wind down the evenings by walking on the beach and chasing the crabs with our flashlights!

Now I want to go, too!!!!!:sad1: We're stuck in awful awful Utah for 8 more months!!! I'm so ready to move back east!

All good advice. But wanted to also suggest The Outer Banks in NC - all the locals in Hampton Roads go there. :thumbsup2 Lots to do, houses and condos to fit all budgets, and of course the beach!

eta: www.outerbanks.org and it is just a little further south from Virginia Beach.
