Is anyone doing the VB RnR 1/2 marathon on September 2nd this year? I signed up for it, I originally wanted to do the Disney half marathon, but registration was full so I signed up for the one on Labor Day. I was wondering if anyone else has done this run and what recommendations they would have. I know the course is very flat and that there are bands all along the course which always makes the running easier. I ran the Boilermaker two weeks ago in Utica, that was 9.3 miles (15K) and I finished in under two hours which I was really thrilled about. The Boilermaker was really fun, I recommend it to anyone in the Utica NY area. I just started running again this year, I don't run fast, but I can run a long way (which reminds me I need to go run now). If anyone has any tips or tricks I would love them! What are the best methods to prevent chafing? Hope to hear from some fellow run/walkers (I certianly don't run the entire course :))

I am not participating, but I will be out there supporting! It is a great weekend here in VB and it is a huge marathon with people coming from all over the world to participate.

Here is a website if anyone is interested, looks like there are 100 spots left.

Good luck on the marathon, hope you have a great time visiting VB.

There is an Events side to WISH. I am going to move this thread there since there are many walkers/runners that might have advice.

Hummmmm... I'm not sure what advice to offer. I am doing the race this year and I done it 3-4 times previously. For me, the primary challenge in this race is dealing with the heat. Although there is ample water on the course, I plan to carry my Camelbak filled with ice -- something about having cool water anytime I want it makes me more comfortable.

Your pace sounds like you won't have a problem easily finishing within the time limit.

As far as chafing, I'd recommend trying some Body Glide -- available in running stores and REI, as well as online. You can use it under your clothes, on your feet -- anywhere chafing and blisters are a problem. I typically don't need to reapply it during a half (though sometimes it wears off when I do a full marathon because it takes me so darned long to finish!)

The expo will be crowded, so be prepared. But the ocean is there waiting when you finish the run/walk, so you can go straight in for a cooling leg soak.

Oh! I almost forgot! One of the most challenging things about this race to many participants is that you pass the finish line at about the 11-mile mark, go out (away) from the line about a mile (though it seems much longer because it is unshaded and so late in the race) before turning back and finishing the last mile on the unshaded boardwalk along the ocean. I always overhear many folks lamenting "Where is the turnaround?!?!?!?!" I'd advise you to look at the course map and note the street where you will make the turn. The streets are numbered, so you can count down for yourself to the turnaround, which makes it far easier mentally than just hanging on until you see the turn.

Enjoy!

This race sounds like a really fun race, have a great time! I am doing DL, but maybe next year. I agree about the body glide, it works really well.

I did Virginia Beach last year and am doing it again this year! The one thing is the heat....it killed me last year. By mile 10 I was fading fast! I saw alot of runners hitting the ground and the medical crews were working overtime.

I am not racing this year.....I am training for a marathon the end of September. I promised my kids last year that I would do it again since they had a blast that weekend, and the concert was great. That is the only reason I am doing it this year. I will not be going for any kind of PR. Just using it as a training run.
