We will be going to VB for Memorial Day Weekend using cash & points from our Starwood card.

Where are good places to eat that do not cost a lot of money (maybe some place the locals know about that the tourists don't think to go to ;) ). I figure I have to drive away from the beach & don't mind that. Just want some recommendations. Thanks!

I use restaurant.com all the time. I would stay away from the hotel restaurants they are never very good. Most of the restaurants that are in hotels on restaurant.com don't tell you that so it takes a little research.

Also look for ones that don't say you need 2 entrees or have a lot of restrictions. I use them for desserts when I can find them and for those I don't mind a hotel restaurant.

We lived there years ago.

Not sure if a 3 day stay makes it truly worthwhile, but some of the drugstores used to sell the Entertainment book that was filled with BOGOF coupons and also had discounts to local attractions.

A place worth mentioning that the locals love----The Grate Steak. Best steak in the area! Google it and go there. It will be a memorable experience. It is neither cheap nor expensive...........it is reasonable. It the most fun if a small group of people go as opposed to just a couple.

Let me give you an update. The Grate Steak is now in a terrible area. I would NEVER go there after dark. It's a steak house where you cook your own steak. I always thought if I want to cook I would stay home. I have not been there in years do the the declining area.

If you like Vietnamese Pho noodles - Pho 79 is awesome!!!! (and inexpensive) 4816 Virginia Beach Boulevard, Virginia Beach - (757) 687-7844. It's right down from the VA Beach Town Center.

Mahi Mah's is not cheap, but very good and you can sit outside on the beach. We also enjoyed Outer Banks Seafood Company the other weekend. Surf Rider Restaurant on Laskin Road is very inexpensive and I love it. My DH not so much, but he is not a seafood person, so that's mainly it.

The area is not completely horrible (think in the mid 90s when the gang activity around there was ridiculous) But I agree about cooking your own meal at restaurant prices. The meat is good though. To each his own.

Thanks for the suggestions. I totally forgot about restuarant.com, will check that out.

I would love to hear about more yummy restaurants in the area. :thumbsup2

I live in Virginia Beach. Would recommend looking at the Virginia Beach Restaurant Association website. Most members are non-chain, local restaurants. Check out Beach Bully (barbecue), Flip Flops, Frankie's Place for Ribs, Green Onion, No Frill, Side Street Cantina, El Tapatio, Reginella's. Plus, there are all of the typical chain places you would expect, and prices are not crazy high (I love the occasional trip to Cracker Barrel).

Have fun!

These are all great. We also love Surf Rider and Plaza Azteca.

We loved the Jewish Grandmother I think the name is??

Jewish Mother - It's on 31st and Pacific at Laskin Rd. I haven't been there in years! They also have one in Norfolk. They had great bands on the weekends and still do from what I hear.

Don't forget about Groupon - Hampton Roads. It seems like every other day it's a restaurant one.

Jewish Mother is closed. It was purchased by the city for a road project. I heard they are relocating but I don't think the new one is open yet.

To the OP...

Your best bet on restaurants is to get away from the oceanfront area. If you head down 31st Street (Laskin Road) away from the beach heading west you'll come to a major shopping center area called Hilltop where there are all kinds of restaurants that you can choose from. This is at the intersection of Laskin Rd & First Colonial Rd and there are large shopping centers at all four corners.

Are you bringing kids? I live in VB too, and I love to eat, and love a bargain!!! I can help, just let me know if you have kids or not.:thumbsup2

I was there for training a few years ago and we loved Cheeseburger in Paradise. Kinda Jimmy Buffet-ish, but they would make drinks with the cutest little things made out of fruit and would toss the beers across the bar. Food was pretty good and fairly reasonable too!

Yes, DS will be turning 16 while we are there & DD is 12.

Will keep that in mind.

DS is a HUGE cheeseburger fan!

We moved from Virginia Beach to California last August and we miss it terribly! I guess it's good that we still own a house there! :thumbsup2 Anyway......You have got to go to Whitner's BBQ!!!!! Awesome BBQ at a great price! It's the BEST!!! It's up near Lynnhaven Mall. Tell Warren (the owner) that Cheryl sent ya! Also Y-Not Pizza is good. It's on Great Neck Road.
