It is excellent - your choice of brand new films, older films, music channels - CDs to listen to (I spent a very pleasant hour with David Bowie, you know!). Some great games, too, to amuse the kids (and me!). The 8 hour flight just wasn't enough time to do everything I wanted!
It may have been that they put a Heathrow specified 747 on that route that day due to a lack of the normal Gatwick/Manchester planes. If so you were very lucky!
V-Port is only on the Heathrow kitted out planes (A lot more UCS than the gatwick plaes 44 seats to the 14 onthe gatwick ones, less PE seats)
The aircraft flying the Gatwick-MCO-GatwicK and Manchester-MCO-Manchester (and a few others from gatwick as well rotate between the following aircraft:

The two with Odyssey are two older Heathrow aircraft changed to the B & S run seating, the other five were a cancelled Alitalia order which Virgin bought at knock down price as they were far down the road to being finished and thats why they have the rubbish system. However they are the youngest 747's in virgins fleet

As the new A340 and the super big A380's come on line its expected that these planes will be re configured to B & S format and operate out of Gatwick, manchester and well who knows which other UJ regional airport? so in time you will get the chance for V-Port
